GT / Stretch Class Lately
Fourth graders set off from Independence, Missouri on the 2,000 mile Oregon Trail. They will be making decisions with their wagon company during this simulation to ford rivers, buy and sell supplies, hunt, and cross the Cascades before getting snowed in for winter.
Fifth graders completed their tiny houses with 3D designs on TinkerCAD, and tried solving "stories with holes." They also worked on rebus puzzles, which are great way to develop visual understanding, number integration, and improve creative thinking.
Building Thinking Skills- Even Over Summer
Summer learning shouldn’t look like classroom learning. Here are some ways kids can keep learning over the summer that are fun, engaging and hands-on! How many can your family check off this summer?
Play Strategy Games - Checkers and chess are great games for critical thinking skills because children need to be able to think about each move and its repercussions several moves later.
Create new Art - Incorporate the arts into your critical thinking sessions by having your child create a new song, dance, or skit to share about a topic they love.
Stay up to Date with Current Events - Adults use critical thinking skills to read the news and form opinions about what is happening in the world. Your child can do this too! Find relevant, appropriate articles and ask your children what they think about the issues presented.
Read a Novel Together - A key component of critical thinking is to be able to draw from your own experience and knowledge. The more you read, the more you learn, plain and simple. Reading also helps us learn about and understand the experiences and perspectives of others.
Play around with Anagrams - Write down a word that has at least 6 letters. In 5 minutes, see how many new words you can create by scrambling the letters. Or play an online game together like Wordle.
Chess Club
What a year! We are competing in our single-elimination chess tournament right now. There are some serious competitors this year. I will make a post soon with the winner of the 2023 tournament.
