Sunshine State Young Readers Award

Osceola Science Charter School is excited to offer all students an opportunity to participate in the Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) and Sunshine State Young Readers Award JUNIOR Programs. These statewide reading motivational programs are for students in grades K-5 and are brought to schools in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.

SSYRA Jr. is for students in grades K - 2

SSYRA is for students in grades 3 – 5

Each group has a total of 15 books to read. Once a student has finished a book, he/she will take an AR Quiz to check comprehension/understanding of the book. Upon reading a Sunshine State book and earning an 80% or higher on the AR Quiz, students will earn a unique "brag tag" inspired by the cover. Additionally, students will have their names placed on the Sunshine State Readers bulletin board in the media center.

K - 2nd:

• 5 books: Students will have one-hour play day.

• 10 books: Students will have an ice cream party and $5 voucher to use in OSCS book fair.

• 15 books: Special end of year Field Trip.

3rd - 5th:

• 5 books: Students will participate in voting for their favorite book in the spring.

i-Ready

Dear Parents,

Our school will soon be implementing a program called i-Ready® Diagnostic & Instruction that will provide our students with an innovative diagnostic assessment and engaging instruction.

IMPORTANT: If you have not already done so, please send in a set of headphones for your child to use on the computers. Headphones should be stored in the classrooms in zip lock bags and should not be shared between students. We will no longer provide class sets of headphone to avoid the spreading of head lice or any other pediculosis.
