The Cool Spring Times

The Principal's Pen

On behalf of the Cool Spring Staff, I would like to welcome all of our families to the new school year! A special welcome to those families who are new to Cool Spring. It was such a delight to see the smiling faces of our students (and parents) on these first few days of school. The new school year brings such excitement and hope for the many learning opportunities that our students, staff and parents will have this year to grow and experience success. In fact, every day is an opportunity for us- teachers, administrators and parents- to work together in supporting our students. We recognize that our students have different strengths, interests and areas for growth, be it academically or with respect to social-emotional development. A positive, collaborative and growth-oriented mindset along with the strategies, tools and supports of school and home will undoubtedly lead to great things for our students this year. I truly am excited to be part of this journey and for the opportunity to work with our students and a talented Cool Spring staff! Additionally, if you are a new family whom I have not yet met, I would appreciate the chance to meet you. I hope to see many of our families around the school soon!

Looking forward to a great year!

Principal

Personalized Learning at CSP

We are excited this school year to engage students with personalized learning experiences. As our students have different strengths, interests and needs, personalized learning involves tailoring instruction around these factors, in lieu of a one-size fits all model. We will use targeted small group instruction, adaptive digital content, varied learning activities as well as goal setting and reflection to support our students with this model. Students will have opportunities for collaboration and voice and choice, encouraging ownership of learning. Students will have multiple pathways to show their understanding of skills and content. More information and learning opportunities for parents will be forthcoming. Stay tuned!

Happy Birthday Cool Spring!

Cool Spring Celebrates 30 Years this month! All families are invited to a birthday picnic on Fri., September 6 at 5:45-7:30PM. Pack a picnic dinner and bring a chair/blanket. We'll provide the birthday cake and some fun music! Visit with current and former students, staff and community members. We hope to see you there as we celebrate our school and Penguin family!

Penguins FUN RUN

We're ready for FUN! We will be working with Boosterthon again this year for our main fundraiser- the CSP Penguins Fun Run. It's a 9 day character education and fitness program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on Sept. 16 (PK-2 at 9AM; Gr. 3-5 at 10:00AM). Then, families may pledge support for every lap their student runs (30-35 laps) at the Fun Run on Sept. 25! Donations will go towards teacher instructional grants, instruments for the school-wide music program, books for school-wide guided reading/literacy instruction and maker space materials.

The program, integrated with the PBIS national framework, will bring together a STEM and WILD, WILD, WEST theme!

We invite you to help the school and PTA by reaching out to sponsors. All levels of participation are appreciated, and this can be guided by parents/guardians. For families who would prefer to make an individual donation to the school, we appreciate that support as well. All families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run. Thank you for your support! More info to come!

ParentVue Tool

With the LCPS move towards reducing paper use and streamlining access to important information, all families are encouraged to active their ParentVue account and access the portal throughout the school year.

Why should you use ParentVue?

*Update emergency contacts/information

*Update student health information

*Access student report card and assessment data (paper copies not being sent)

*Weather information opt-outs

*Family-life education opt-outs

*Acknowledge required forms such as Student Rights&Responsibilities, Media Release, Technology use and more.

If you forgot your password, visit portal.lcps.org to reset the password. Families may also contact or stop in to the school office for assistance with ParentVue.

LCPS School Nutrition Services Information

The LCPS breakfast and lunch menus are available online at http://lcps.healthycafe.org and on the Cool Spring website.

The Free and Reduced Meal application is available online. Families wishing to request meal assistance should apply at http://nlappscloud.com. There are no longer paper applications. Families needing assistance with completing the application may contact our Parent Liaison, Ms. Callaghan at Paula.Callaghan@lcps.org or by contacting the school office.

LCPS has reviewed and revised guidelines to promote healthy nutritional habits among all students and to support students with severe food allergies. Related to these guidelines, we cannot accept any cookies, cakes, cupcakes or other food treats for students’ birthdays; including for use during lunch. We are no longer permitted to have ice cream from the cafeteria be purchased for birthdays as well. For classroom parties during the school year, the teachers will work in conjunction with room parents and in communication with parents of students with severe food allergies to ensure safe and health conscious items are used.

From the PE Dept

Welcome back! In September, Gr. 4-5 students will complete their Pre-Fitness measurements. They will be tested on their flexibility, cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance and muscular strength. Please ask your students about these tests and what goals they would like to set for themselves!

All grade levels will be learning the Five Components of Fitness (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) this month. We will play games and activities to help us learn each one and understand the effects each component of fitness has on the body. Students will understand the importance of each component and give example exercises for each component.

Please have your students wear tennis shoes on their PE days. Shoes such as sandals, crocs, open toed, and dress shoes are not safe to wear during Physical Education classes. Please contact Mrs. Blakeney or Mr. Nowak with any questions about the PE program or visit the PE page on the Cool Spring website.
