Polkadot Class Happenings

The Week of May 13 to May 17

Reading

This week we are working on writing a reader's response to text we have read. We will be putting the reader's response in a portfolio to be sent up to third grade. The students are enjoying showing off the skills they have learned this year.

Writing

This week we are finishing up our non-fiction writing unit. The kids are publishing their non-fiction books and we will be doing an Author's Chair on Friday so they can share their work. They have been working so hard and I am very proud of their work!

Math

In math we are focusing on problem solving and adding/subtracting strategies. We are working a variety of problem types and learning how to follow the action in a problem.

Social Studies

We have been learning about how our economy works so this week we are making products for our Second Grade economics fair. It will be held next week on Wednesday, May 22nd. They will have the chance to be both producer and consumer and will decide what to do with the "income" they make from selling their products. They need supplies and materials to create their products. If you have any extra yarn, water bottles, stickers, toilet paper rolls, glitter, or beads, please send it with your child to school. This is a very big project and the kids are excited about it!

Other Important News

Parent/Teacher Conference: It is time for End of Year Parent/Teacher conferences. Please sign up for a spot to discuss your child's academic progress this year and what you can do to support your child for next year. The link to sign up is: http://tinyurl.com/brvapxn. I look forward to speaking with you.

Library Books - Our class has the chance to win a Popsicle party if everyone turns in their library books by May 17th! Please encourage your child to find/return missing library books to school as soon as possible. Books that are not found can be paid for by cash or check. Notices will be coming home this week and next week.

Have a great week!
