Coping Skills: What are they and how to use them
What are coping skills?
Below is a list of coping strategies that can be utilized in your day to day life. Review the sheet to see if you have been using any and/or to add more to your tool belt when needed!
Unhealthy coping strategies tend to feel good in the moment, but have long-term negative consequences. Examples include overeating, procrastination, social withdrawal and aggression.
Healthy coping strategies may not provide instant gratification, but they lead to long-lasting positive outcomes. Examples include exercise, talking about your problem(s), healthy eating, relaxation techniques (such as deep breathing), using social support or seeking professional help.
Below is a worksheet you can utilize to explore a problem you are currently dealing with, and the various coping strategies you may be using in response. Click here for a copy of this worksheet.
