Weekly Reminders
Week 5 Term 1 - Week Commencing Monday 27th February 2023

Dear Families
What is Lent?
Lent is a forty-day period of preparation for Easter. It reminds us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness before he took up his ministry. During this time he fasted and prayed. Lent is a time of self-denial and prayer for us as well. During this period, we are called to focus on becoming closer to Jesus by praying a little more, doing good deeds for others, going without something we like and giving generously to others in need.
Thank you to everyone who helped prepare and deliver the Ash Wednesday Mass this week. Project Compassion boxes were sent home this week, please donate to Project Compassion 2023. Together, we can help vulnerable communities face their challenges today and build a better tomorrow 'For All Future Generations'.
Year 4 Assembly
Our Year 4 classes will be presenting the first Assembly of 2023 next Friday 3rd March at 8.45am. All are welcome to attend.
Annual Community Meeting
Thank you to all who attended the Annual Community Meeting on Wednesday night in the Learning Hub. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear all about the hard work of the Advisory Council and P&F. Thank you very much to Craig, Jain and Pam for presenting their reports to our community.
The Parent Circle
Our St Emilie’s parent group, known as the Parent Circle is a chance for any parent to meet to chat and have a cup of tea/coffee. The 'Parent Circle' welcomes all St Emilies’s parents, whether you have school age children or little ones still at home. This is a great chance to take a time out, or get to know school parents. The Parent Circle will meet every second week in the Small Hall from 8.50am to 10.30am commencing this Thursday 2nd March.
House Swimming Trials
On Monday Year 4 to 6 students (and selected Year 3 students) who nominated themselves for the House Swimming Trials will travel to Riverton Leisureplex. From these trials, our Interschool Swimming team is selected. Thank you to Mr Davis for organising the trials.

Parenting Article
This week under the Parent Reading heading, we have included an Insights article titled, 'Help your Year 6 child make a smooth transition into secondary school' by Sheryl Strong. A recent ACER study led by Life Ed found that a significant number of Australian students feel underprepared and nervous about the move to secondary school. That’s why Life Ed has launched a comprehensive program of free online resources to assist students make the leap from Year 6 to Year 7... and land firmly on their feet.

Laxmi's story - Nepal
After losing her father at a young age, Laxmi was at risk of falling further into extreme poverty. But with the support of our partner Caritas Nepal, Laxmi joined a child's club, became a leader in her school and is now a mentor to other girls in her village.
Laxmi lives with her mother and siblings in Jajarkot, one of the least developed districts in the remote Karnali province, with almost half of the population living below the poverty line.
Tragedy struck when Laxmi was 10-years-old. Her father, who worked hard to pay for his children’s education, passed away. Laxmi was devastated. She used to love to go to school but for the first time she stopped attending her classes.
Before her father’s passing, Laxmi joined a child's club at her school that was run with the support of Caritas Nepal, through the Nepal Livelihoods and Resilience Program. Child's clubs support students to develop their speaking, writing and leadership skills through extracurricular activities.
Thanks to the support of her child's club, Laxmi was encouraged to resume her education. She became an active member of her child's club, where she developed the skills and confidence to become a leader, advocating for clean water taps at her school.
