Penn moving to Virtual Learning through Jan. 15

Penn High School will begin Virtual Learning for all students starting on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, through Friday, Jan. 15, 2021. The decision to move to Virtual Learning is based on a recommendation by the St. Joseph County Health Dept.


The first day back to Hybrid Learning (In-Person and Virtual Learning) is Tuesday, Jan. 19.


The First Semester will end on Friday, Jan. 15. Click here for the First Semester Exam Schedule. The Second Semester will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Student materials pick-up days have been scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1, and Wednesday, Dec. 2. Teachers will contact students if they need to come in and pick up materials.

Graduation information needed

Seniors, please provide Penn with your legal name the way you want it printed on your diploma, and how your name is to be pronounced at graduation.

Jostens will send out an email on Monday, Nov. 30, with a catalog and information on how to order graduation items, including your cap and gown.


All graduation orders must be placed online, by phone or by mail no later than Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Penn offers Pharmacy Technician certification program

Current Seniors . . .


Have you thought about a career as a Pharmacist? Would you like to get a step ahead of the game during high school?


We offer a Pharmacy Technician Certification program through Indiana University at South Bend for SENIORS only. When students complete the program they receive their certification from the State of Indiana and will be licensed to work in any pharmacy. Penn takes care of the tuition and families are responsible for the purchase of books.


Courses in the Advanced CTE CC program will meet one of the requirements for the Academic and Technical Honor Diplomas.


We are currently scheduling for the spring semester!!

English Academic Super Bowl Team materials pick-up

Members of the English Academic Super Bowl Team should pick up their materials from the English office. Virtual students should pick up their materials at Door A. The materials are labeled with student names and they should pick up: 1. The Joy Luck Club, 2. A Raisin in the Sun. 3. a packet of short stories and poems.


The first regular meeting will be January 7. More details to follow.

Virtual student free meal pick-up moving to Door K

Free Meal pick-up for virtual students will be moving to Door K on the south side of the school.


Dates and times will remain Wednesday and Friday from 4-6 p.m.


Door K is off Jefferson next to the playground on the practice football field side.

Free school meals offer to Hybrid students

FREE SCHOOL MEALS FOR HYBRID STUDENTS: On Wednesdays and Fridays each week, students who are on a hybrid schedule can pick up three free meals before they leave for the day.


Students can stop into the IMC, Door C, or Door D to collect these meal packages.

ISTEP Winter Retest Window is Nov. 10 - Dec. 11.



  • Seniors who need to take ISTEP for graduation purposes are scheduled to take ISTEP in the Testing Office
  • English ISTEP Testing will take place November 17-20.

PSAT make-up set for Jan. 26.

January 26, 2021, is the last makeup opportunity for any student in grade 10-11 who did not take PSAT on either October 14 or 29.


Students who would like to take the PSAT on this date must sign up with the Testing Office by Nov. 30.

The College Board mandates that the PSAT be given in-person. Penn High School does not determine this policy.

Community events open to P-H-M students and families

Free Lunch!

Thanks to a USDA waiver, all meals served to students at P-H-M will be free until further notice.


Student accounts will be charged for any ala-carte sales.



Penn High School will offer pre-packaged breakfasts. Students will select pre-packaged meal components in the cafeteria.


Penn will also be offering take-home meals for students. The meals will cover the days when students are learning from home. Meals will be given out at the end of the day on Wednesday and Friday. The package will contain three breakfast and three lunch meals. Items will be frozen if possible and bags will have heating and storage instructions.


We will have meals available for the 100 percent virtual learners from all schools and the community. Meals will be distributed at Penn High School Door C from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday. It will be the same type of bag with only four meals on Wednesday and six on Friday. Students do not need to be present for the parent or guardian to pick up meals. Student ID’s will not be required.


Parents who do not want their student to have a free meal may donate the money to our fund for students who do not have money for meals. Contact Jill Riggs at jriggs@phm.k12.in.us to donate. We are able to do the free meals due to a temporary waiver from the USDA. This will most likely last no longer than this semester. Money currently on student accounts will remain for their later use.

Return to Learn safety protocols

Penn High School began its Hybrid Return to Learning plan on Monday, Sept. 21.


This document outlines our Return to Learn safety protocols as it relates to arrival and dismissal procedures, passing periods, lunch and classroom instruction.

Report student COVID-19 related symptom information to Penn

As we anticipate the return of students, Penn High School students will need to be screened at home each morning for symptoms of COVID-19 before reporting to the school for learning.


If a student presents one or more COVID-19 related symptoms, this information must be communicated to the school attendance office - 258-9501.


The following list shares those symptoms.

  • Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by the mouth

  • New onset of severe headache, especially with fever

  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing

  • Sore throat

  • Loss of taste or smell

  • Diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain


Any student with one or more COVID-19 related symptom must stay home. If the student is at school, the student must be picked up within one hour of the parent being contacted. An additional conversation will need to take place with school officials to determine the correct plan of action. The student showing symptoms of COVID-19 could be subject to a 14-day quarantine.

PTO introduction, update

The Penn PTO welcomes you to join us for the 2020-2021 school year. While this year may look diferent, the purpose of the PTO is still vital.


Over the past 3 years, the Penn PTO has provided grants to teachers, student groups, clubs, and organizations who apply during our fall grant cycle. The PTO also assists with volunteer opportunities, hosts the annual Snowball Dance, which is open to all grade levels 9-12, provides monthly teacher/staff appreciation events/recognition, and meets monthly to keep lines of communication open between parents, students, and administration. Kingsmen Community Care Club

We are so excited to be back! Our club, Kingsmen Community Care, is still happening this year.


Kingsmen Community Care is a partnership with the Center for the Homeless in South Bend.


In the past year we hosted many donation drives and hosted two events for the children that live there, a Fall Festival and a Movie Night. Although we cannot be in person for quite some time this year, we do have many exciting things planned.


Our meetings will be on an Instagram live for followers or anyone else that would like access. We then will be saving the livestream and emailing it out so that the information can be watched at your convenience. To share your email and to be put on our email list please email either ehenderson006@phm.k12.in.us or cperkins023@phm.k12.in.us or contact Mrs. Weaver with any further questions you may have. We are very excited for this year and hope you are too!

Writers' Guild meets first and third Friday of each Month

Writers' Guild meets on the first and third Friday of each month after school from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Room 239 for in-person students that day and virtually for those working from home. Girls Lacrosse student-athlete/parent meeting set for Nov. 30

There will be a Penn Girls Lacrosse student-athlete/parent meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.


Coach Eutsey will send a link to the players email on Wednesday, Nov. 25.


Any new players or freshmen, please send an email to Coach Eutsey by Tuesday, Nov. 24, with your school email. This way you can be sent the link to the Virtual meeting.

All-Sports Passes are now available at reduced prices.


Adult All-Sports Passes are $50, and Student All-Sports Passes are $30.

Student-Athletes must be picked up at Door D after practice

Student-Athletes who are getting picked up at the main Penn High School building must be picked up at Door D after practices.


Parents/Guardians are asked not to pick up student-athletes at Door E due to safety concerns.

Bittersweet Railroad Crossing Alert

The railroad tracks at Bittersweet Rd. (just north of McKinley) are active, but do not have warning lights or crossing arms. Please use caution approaching these tracks.


Stop signs have been installed on Bittersweet Rd. (north of McKinley) at the railroad crossing. Stop signs have also been added on Cedar Trail, Birch Road, Apple Road, and Ash Rd. (County Line). Please use caution and be aware of the new stops on routes to Penn.

Student may only ride on assigned bus

Students may only ride on their assigned bus. Students are not allowed to ride the bus home with their friends.

Student before-school drop-off procedures

The designated student morning drop-off at Penn High School is in the Jefferson Rd. Student Parking Lot (south of the football practice field). All entrances will open for students at 8:35 unless there is a previously scheduled appointment. Students must then report to door A.

All parents and guardians are encouraged to review Skyward information for your student. General directions are listed below to access Skyward. Please take some time to review student progress and encourage your student to develop a plan for any missing work.


Also, we recently realized that Skyward has not been sending out notifications to parents/guardians for missing assignments or low grades. This will be fixed next week. Parents will then be able to set individual preferences for future notifications.

Fees for the 2020/2021 school year are now available in Skyward. Please log into your Skyward Family Access Account to see your student’s fees. These fees will not change through the school year, even if your student drops or adds courses.


You have several options as to how you may pay this bill. Your payment options are:


1. You may send your payment with your student to the Bookstore. We accept check, money order, or cash.


2. You may mail your payment to:
