Principal Message

Dear Parents,

Student safety is paramount here at École OLPH. This year, as a result of less students taking the bus there has been an increase in parent pick up / drop off at the start and the end of the day. This has caused high volumes of traffic around the school. To ensure the safety of our students, staff, & families, we are calling on the École OLPH community to help us refine our dismissal procedures.

After consultation with Strathcona County Bylaw enforcement and Transportation Integration and Safety Advisor we will be making the following adjustments:

  • During high traffic times (morning drop off / after school pick up) the staff parking lot will have only one entrance and one exit point (see picture 2 below)
  • Refrain from parking on either side of the crosswalk at all times (see picture 1 below).
  • All students are required to use the crosswalk when crossing the street.

Please continue to do the following:

  • Driving slowly through the school zone especially at the crosswalk.
  • Being courteous to all drivers.
  • Continue using the church parking lot as a pick up and drop off location.
  • Respect our supervisors when they are directing traffic.

Traffic safety is a partnership between students, staff, parents, and the community. We are grateful that Strathcona County Bylaw Enforcement will be supporting us in our efforts to establish and maintain safe pick up & drop off procedure for our students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at alyrem@eics.ab.ca or 780-467-5631.

God Bless

A Reading From The Gospel for Sunday, November 1, 2020

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Then Jesus began to speak, and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Gospel of the Lord.

School Council News

Dear Parents,

We have opened our OLPH Apparel store from now until November 12th. Show your school spirit and order one of the hoodies, joggers, t-shirts, pullovers or long sleeve shirts. Be sure to check the sizing for youth or large.

You can order here: ttps://olphfall2020.itemorder.com/sale

Orders will be in by December 16th to the school for distribution.

Break the Rules Day!

We are currently planning, alongside our amazing teachers, a Covid-safe Break the Rules day to take place on November 27th.

As no parent volunteers can be in the school, we are depending on our teachers to help pull off this fun day within their cohorts. All "rules" will be pre-ordered through a google form that will be going out next week and it will be sure to be a super fun day!

All money raised from this event will be going towards a special gift for our hard working teachers.

Since we cannot drop water balloons on our Principal this year, he has agreed to another rather crazy request that will be live streamed to all the classrooms. Stay tuned for more details!

Thank you,

OLPHFA Membership Form

Dear Parents,

OLPH Fundraising Association:

As you may know, the OLPH School Council operates as an entity under the School Act to support our school and enhance the experience of our students at OLPH.

What you may not realize is that we fundraise and spend money to support the efforts of the school council (or other special committees raising money) through OLPH Fundraising Association (OLPHFA) which operates under the Societies Act, separate from the school. As with any association (like sports or arts), to be a member, you must complete a membership form.

Becoming a member of the OLPHFA is voluntary, free and available to all parents or legal guardians of students at OLPH. As a member you will have the right to:

  • Vote at any general meeting of the membership (AGM, SGM)
  • Receive notice of all meetings and fundraising activities
  • Serve on committees or chair fundraisers
  • Stand for election as an Officer or Director on the Board
With Covid, we are reducing paper exchange and have created a google form for you to complete: https://forms.gle/N4oK14JrhikWwvsE7

Typing your name and date at the end represents your signature.

We encourage all our parents to join as members. Each parent needs to fill out a separate form.

Thank you,

Natalie Wallace

President, OLPHFA

School Fundraisers

Dear Parents,

If you are shopping for the week at Save On Foods, Wye Road, please pop your receipt into an envelope and send with your student to drop off in the office in our mailbox. 5% from all your grocery purchases go to support our school. Thank you to the many parents who have been submitting their receipts. We hope to give you an up to date total soon.

Also, if you are buying delicious baked goods from Cobs on Wye Road, be sure to tell them, ahead of your purchase, that you would like to support OLPH School. We will also receive 5% back on those purchases.

These fundraising efforts are going to replace our old water fountains with new bottle filler ones.

Thank you!

Insight Testing

Dear Parents,

Insight is a group-administered test of cognitive abilities, which will be administered to all grade 5 and 8 classes in the first week of November. The assessment is designed to measure cognitive abilities including reasoning, comprehension, memory, and visual/auditory processing.

Students do not need to study for this type of assessment, and the results are not used to evaluate their school achievement. The results provide information to help teachers recognize student strengths and plan for additional supports as needed.

If you would like to learn more about this assessment tool, please visit http://www.canadiantestcentre.com and select the Insight tab near the top of the page. While there you may also want to look into the CAT-4 academic assessment tool, which will be used to measure overall academic ability of Grade 4 and 7 students in the spring.

Student Absence Support

Dear Parents,

Thank you for continued support with communicating student absences to the school.

With increase absent reporting this year, we thought it would be helpful to share the steps when reporting your child’s absence:

  • Step 1: Input your child’s absence using the SchoolMessenger or contact Mme Winland at the office at 780-467-5631.

  • Step 2: If you so choose, you may contact your child’s teacher to inform them of their absence. Teachers contact emails are located here on the school website.

If your child has symptoms related to COVID-19, you may receive a phone call from Mme Winland with regards to procedures about your child’s return to classes.

School Procedures

Student Pick Up Procedures

Class instructional time is extremely important to all students. In order to minimize interruptions during class time, we will only be calling your child down to the office upon your arrival so that your child does not miss any of their valuable class instructional time.

All students are required to inform Mme Winland before leaving the school grounds, even if they have been excused to leave early via School Messenger.

If the student is being picked up by someone other than their parents, please advise the school as to who will be picking up the said student.

Student Tardy Procedures

Should your child arrive late to school in the mornings or the afternoon, please have them come to the front doors of the school and ring the doorbell located directly on the front door of the school – entrance 1 (see picture below). Mrs Winland will then let them into the school.

End of Day Procedures

Please make sure that your child(ren) know if they are to take the bus or if they are getting picked up at the end of the day.

If a student comes to the office at the end of the day and are unsure if they are taking the bus or if you are picking them up, we will be sending them home on the bus.

École OLPH Staff Parking

École OLPH staff parking lot is a drop off and pick up free flowing zone. Your collaboration and consideration to others will be greatly appreciated to keep the traffic flow moving at all times.

School Doors

The school doors will be open at 8:35 a.m., unless the weather is extremely cold, whereas the doors will be open for students to wait quietly in their classrooms.

Fee Waiver

Dear Parents,

School fees information and the Fee Waiver form can be found here.
