Wingman Program Comes to NMHS

We are excited to announce that on 11/14 NMHS Administration introduced the Wingman program to our student body through presentations by Ian Hockley, Executive Director of Dylan’s Wings of Change. The program, which utilizes students as leaders, helps students realize the connections that exist between peers, but also develops social and emotional skills through team bonding and trust building activities. In the week following the introduction assemblies, students were given the opportunity to sign up for consideration to become a Wingman Student Leader. Once faculty has selected and trained student leaders, NMHS will be rolling out various Wingman student-led activities throughout the year to achieve the primary goal of improving school climate and culture, as well as to inspire our students to be more empathetic, courageous and inclusive, in an effort to create a school community that is a welcoming place for everyone.

Instant Decision Week Yields 90% Acceptance Rate!

December's Instant Decision Week 2019 at NMHS has come to a close, with 111 applications being processed in person by Admissions Reps from seven schools including Western, Central and Southern Connecticut State Universities, Mercy College, Iona College, and Naugatuck Valley Community College. The event generated on-the-spot acceptances for 100 of those applicants, with the remaining eleven applicants being wait-listed until after midterm. For the admitted students, they won't have to wait any longer to find out whether or not they've been accepted. For the wait-listed students, meeting the reps face-to-face and making that personal connection allows the student to stand out individually as more than just grades on a transcript, or scores in a report when their application goes before the school's Admissions committee after the close of first semester. It also provides the wait-listed student with an opportunity to discuss alternate options for admission to the school, through a different program, as a transfer student, and the like. Congratulations to all the students who participated!

SENIORS: Plan Ahead for College Application Deadlines

Typically, your transcript requests are sent electronically within a few days of your request in Naviance. However, if you plan to apply to college over Winter Break, your transcript will not be sent out until January 2 when we return to school. If all of your documents are required by January 1, then you need to apply by December 15, so that you can request your transcript in Naviance to be sent out during the week of December 16-20, after you've submitted your application. For most schools, you must submit your application by the deadline - your transcripts and letters of recommendation can be sent after you've applied.

December Events at the Observatory

The John J. McCarthy Observatory is hosting its monthly Second Saturday Stars open house on Saturday December 14th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. This month’s topic is the New Horizons probe and its journey into the Kuiper Belt. New Horizons was launched in 2006 and reached the dwarf planet Pluto in 2015. The probe continues to make its way through the outer reaches of our solar system, sending back valuable information about dwarf planets, comets and other Kuiper Belt objects.

This month the freshman science classes will be continuing their visits the observatory and viewing their extensive meteorite collection and learning how the age of the Earth was calculated using meteorites, the oldest surviving pieces of the early solar system.

To learn more about December events at the observatory, visit the website at or see Mrs. Ragonnet in Room 3303. Also, check out this month’s Green Wave TV episode (below) for a feature on the Observatory and our November events.
