A MINUTE WITH DR MAXWELL
Dear East family and friends,
How is it already APRIL??? This year is flying by!
Coming soon is MAP testing (3-4) from May 6-10 and i-Ready testing (K-4) from May 13-17. Please encourage your child to get a lot of rest and eat healthy too. Pediatricians recommend 3-6 year olds should have 11-12 hours of sleep each day/night. Even children ages 7-12 are encouraged to have 10-11 hours of sleep daily/nightly. Here is a food pyramid from myplate.gov. Hopefully you will have a chance to review this with your child.
MRS. CRIDDLE'S CORNER
Spring is upon us, and we're excited about our end of year activities. We had a great turnout for out PTO Family Dinner Auction and raised $8,654.88. We want to thank all our parents and staff who helped make this event successful!
This is just a friendly reminder to inform the office of any changes in residence, phone numbers and emails. If you have recently moved, please provide the office with your proof of residency (e.g. electric bill). This will ensure that we have the correct information in our files at all times. Thank you for your assistance.
Shauna Criddle, Assistant Principal
MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
What exactly is a school counselor and “all the things” a school counselor does? How is a school counselor different from an “outside” counselor? What can a school counselor do for my student?
Stop by Room 207 on Tuesday, April 9 from 5 - 8 for Cookies and Coffee with the Counselor during the Family Fine Arts Festival with any questions or concerns you have about the school counseling profession or how I can help you and your student!
EAST ELEMENTARY ART SHOW
The East Elementary Art Show is going to look a little bit different this year. If you have attended the Art show in the past, we have typically done an 'All District Art Show' where everyone hangs artwork at the Junior High for a weekend. Because of low attendance, we have decided to take a new approach and have it at our own schools.
East Elementary's 1st annual solo show will be April 9th in the East Elementary Cafeteria from 5 until 8. It will showcase art from 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, Kindergarten and Early Childhood students. We are so excited to have teamed up with a company called Artome, that will take the students artwork and will matte and frame, and put it on display for us for that evening. Parents who attend the show will have the opportunity to buy their child's artwork (already matted and labeled) for $25 and take it home that night. Our school will receive a portion of the money brought in and your child will feel like a REAL artist that has had their artwork bought from a gallery! How COOL!! If other family members would like to purchase the same work of art, the company will make a reproduction of your child's artwork and frame and matte it, for the same $25.
Any artwork not purchased will be packed up that night and taken with the company to be unframed and shipped back to us, in a few weeks. You will have the option to buy the artwork at an 'after show price' of $28 if you decide to purchase it after that night.
This year's show 'theme' is dots. Students have created artwork that goes with the book 'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds. The book's overall lesson is that sometimes all you need to do is try, and something that you thought you weren't very good at, might come easier than you think. I know you can't wait to see what they have made, and I know they will be so proud to show it off! Thank you for your support and I can't wait to see you on April 9th!

STUTTERING
Stuttering is usually not a concern and will typically, gradually improve over time. If you just ignore the stuttering, it will usually resolve without any intervention. Until it does go away by itself, the following is a list of suggestions to follow to help your child.
THINGS TO DO IF YOUR CHILD STUTTERS
1. Listen patiently to what your child says, not how it is said.
2. Respond to the message rather than the stuttering.
3. Allow your child to complete his thoughts without interrupting.
4. Keep natural eye contact while your child is talking.
5. Avoid filling in or speaking your child’s thoughts or ideas.
6. After your child speaks, reply slowly using some of the same words. For example, if he says, “I s-s-see the b-b-bunny.” You reply in an easy relaxed way, “Oh yes, you see the bunny. He’s cute.”
7. Wait a second or so before responding to your child. This helps to calm and slow things down and should help his speech.
8. Spend at least 5 minutes each day devoted to talking with your child in an unhurried, easy, relaxed manner.
