Flipped Classroom
Technology Tools & Tips to Flip Your Classroom
What is a "Flipped Classroom"?
Flipped classrooms are when typical lecture and homework elements are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions.
Tips When "Flipping"
- Don't call it "FLIPPED LECTURES"
- Don't say, "We are going to TRY something new"
- Do set the expectation that students MUST watch the online video-no excuses, find a computer to use!
- Do make the videos as SHORT as possible
- Do have them TAKE NOTES from the video at home
- Do VERIFY who has watched the video
Technology Tools for "Flipping Your Classroom"
ADD VIDEOS
- Upload your own video (District wifi won't block)
- Utilize a video from YouTube or another site
EASILY ALTER VIDEOS
- Crop video
- Insert your voice
- Embed questions for students to answer
VERIFY
- Give students your class code (specific for period)
- Students create an account and watch videos
- Verify who has watched
- Students cannot fast forward
What is Explain Everything?
Explain Everything is an app ($3) that can be downloaded on your iPad (recommended) or smartphone. Allows user to easily record lectures annotations, images and speech.
What to do once your video is complete?
These recordings can be posted online (via YouTube or EdPuzzle) or downloaded and can be used as lecture notes for learners, or standalone teaching, for example in a ‘classroom flipping’ setting.
