Creating and Solving Problems Can Be Fun!

Mrs. Sanschagrin's 6th grade STEM classes created interactive word problems using computer science programs MAKEY MAKEY and Starch. The following photos were taken during the creation of the projects and interactive presentation to 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade students.

We Love Our Veterans

Norterra Canyon's Student Government planned and executed another awesome annual assembly to honor our veterans and current service members. Several veterans joined us with their families for an honorary breakfast before the assembly. The assembly started off with the Sandra Day O'Connor High School Junior ROTC presenting the colors and our own Mr. Burns, in full Navy uniform, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We enjoyed speeches written and read by 7th graders Jasmine, Josie, and Kate, 5th grader Kaylei, and 4th grader Lejla. The Norterra Canyon Band, led by Ms. Belliveau, performed with special guests from the National Coast Guard Band. We were honored and humbled to have so many veterans from our community join us for this special event.

Cyber Safety

As part of their campaign to increase awareness and increase positive internet citizenship, 7th grade StuGo kids created and displayed around our campus posters on cyber safety. Look for them when you are on our campus!

Playing Hockey with the Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes Developmental Instructors visited Norterra Canyon on November 29th and 30th. Students in grades K-8 were exposed to the fundamentals of hockey and game situations. The Coyotes also donated nets, sticks, balls, and a case to the Norterra Canyon Physical Education Department. We would like to thank Rob Coppola, Shaun McGuire, Kevin Smith Marcus Esparnza, Austin Ehyler, and Zach Izumi for making this possible for our students at Norterra Canyon.

New Sidewalk Games

During fall break, a small band of Pirates descended upon the campus and painted sidewalk games on the playground. We were inspired by a group of students who came to us last year when they were in 4th grade and asked us to make the playground more fun. They asked us to build another play structure but since we couldn't afford that, we decided to try something new. We talked with students again, sharing the idea of sidewalk games, and chose some that looked fun. We added chess, dots, a beanbag toss, a lawn dartboard, hopscotch, an obstacle course, and four square. We created a "Peace Path" to help students talk through conflicts.

Since returning from break, it's been fun watching everyone enjoy the new games. We've noticed that they're doing a fantastic job of establishing the rules and picking up all of the materials when they're finished.

Additionally, last year's fourth graders told us that we need to structure games on the field within parameters so that the football games do not take up the entire field. We purchased cones so the football players can contain their games, allowing room for other activities to take place.

We are grateful to the students who helped us come up with ideas for improving recess and for the staff members who gave up to three days of their break to make this happen. It's been such a success, you may continue to see new games pop up on the sidewalks around campus!

Annual Thanksgiving Feast

Our Thanksgiving Feast was an amazing success! We served over 827 meals to our Norterra Canyon students, staff and families. What a great tradition and wonderful time to share with our Pirate Family. Thank you to everyone who made it such a huge success!!

2nd Grade Fry Bread Fun

During the week before break the second grade classrooms learned about the events that led to the first Thanksgiving and then celebrated this festive time by making Indian Fry Bread in their classrooms. The students all had a great time mixing science, math, and FUN! Who knew learning could be so messy?

2nd Annual Breakfast with Santa & Mrs. Claus

Friday, December 8, 7:15-8:15

Please join us again this year for a special muffins and milk ($2 per person) with Santa and Mrs. Claus hosting the breakfast. Suggestions include: puzzles, balls, dolls, toys, sippy cups, jackets size 3T to extra large youth, clothing for infants to extra large youth, bike helmets, scooters, bikes; think of things that would make the holidays brighter for children in the Foster Care System. Tax Credit for Norterra Canyon!!

Impact the Lives of DVUSD Students

You Choose the School!

Your school tax credit donations can provide DVUSD students with opportunities to after school and summer programs, field trips, music and athletic programs or any other extracurricular activity.

The Arizona tax credit program (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) allows a tax credit of up to $200 for individuals and up to $400 for married couples, filing jointly, in support of extracurricular activities.

The tax credit reduces your tax burden to the state of Arizona, dollar for dollar. It also reduces your taxable income to the federal government, usually by 1/3 of your donation.
