Examples
It's raining cats and dogs.
Cats and dogs are not falling from the sky. This means that it is raining very hard and very loud.
She was beating around the bush.
This is not saying that she was actually beating around a bush, it means that she was avoiding the main topic.
The ball is in your court.
This does not mean someone is putting a ball in your court. This means that the decision is up to you this time.
