October is National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National and World Bullying Prevention Month. At Discovery we teach our students to be Safe, Responsible and Respectful and that bullying is never allowed.
We teach students how to Recognize when bullying is happening. How to Report bullying to a caring adult. How to Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others and how to be a Bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying. Bystanders have the potential to make a positive difference in a bullying situation by becoming an upstander. An upstander is someone who sees what happens and intervenes, interrupts, or speaks up to stop the bullying. Bully Prevention lessons are taught in all classrooms through a curriculum called Second Step.
For bullying prevention to work, everyone at school needs to be involved. Our staff are prepared to:
- Recognize and respond to bullying
- Support children who have been bullied
- Correct behaviors of children who are bullying
- Use strategies that support a positive school and classroom climate
We need your help, too! You can help make our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if he or she is being bullied, and give your child the clear message that it is never okay to bully others.
You can also find more information on our district anti-bullying procedures by going to our district website under Board Policies.
If you'd like more information about the difference between rude, mean and bullying behavior, there is a well written article in Psychology Today, by Signe Whitson. Whitson explains bullying is defined as “Intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.” She also writes, “Experts agree that bullying entails three key elements: an intent to harm, a power imbalance, and repeated acts or threats of aggressive behavior. Bullying may be physical, verbal, relational, or carried out via technology.” The article can be found at: www.psychologytoday.com. Another great resource for families in regard to bullying prevention is Pacer.org.
We encourage you to engage your student about these topics and discuss how our differences strengthen each other. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe and respectful place where everyone can learn.

Title 1 Survey
As a parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school, you are an important part of our team. Your input is vital as we plan and implement parent involvement activities in our school. The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background.
A Title I survey provides us with important information and feedback to assist us in supporting all students and families. This survey is confidential and will be used in future planning of our parent involvement programs and school events. The Title I survey will be available on October 25th, following our Title I Annual Meeting.
