Klem South Family Update
May 2021
News from the Principals
We are so happy to see your children back in the building all at once! KS teachers and staff have worked so hard to make the shift as seamless as possible - and last week's Teacher and Staff Appreciation daily treats were so wonderful (and yummy!) Thank you SO MUCH for your support!
While Mrs. Land spends most of her work week at KS, she continues split her time between her two roles (acting principal and director of elementary). To support the building on days she needs to be out of the building, Mrs. Annette McCabe will be stepping in. Mrs. McCabe is a retired administrator from Webster, and we are excited to have her at KS! You may see her on the bus loop already, as she as jumped right in getting to know our staff and students.
Friday, May 14, is a day of school for UPK-8! That was a change made after the PTSA calendar went to print.
Kindergarten Registration continues to be open for September! Please help spread the word to families and friends about registering their children! There are three ways to register.
Go to websterschools.org, click on Student Registration.
Your choice:
1. Download and return the packet by email, or
2. Complete a digital form and scan other required documents, or
3. Pick up a packet at the Student Registration Office at Spry Middle School, fill it out and drop back off to the drop box in the Spry vestibule from 8 am to 4 pm.
Questions? Call KS (585-872-1320) or Student Registration (585-216-0029).
Happy May!

Dr. MacAdam, Assistant Principal
Drop Off & Pick Up
- Students should exit the car on the sidewalk side. If students must exit the driver side (due to a car seat, etc.) the driver should help the student to the sidewalk. We do not want a student on the driver's side of the car without an adult supporting.
- When you arrive to pick up your child, please use the PikMyKid app to announce. If we know who is in the line, we can get the cars in the right order in our system, and get students out of the building quicker!
If you need help with the app, or have questions about drop off or pick up, please call the main office. Thank you!
News from our Classrooms
Grade 1 - Welcome to the marvelous month of May! First graders have adapted so well to our new schedule and the longer day. During the past weeks, students have spent time getting to know their new classmates and learning how to work with double the students in the room. Students are encouraged to continue to read each night at home as they continue to build their fluency and confidence with more challenging books. Please remember that we have Library class every week now. Books should be brought back for our weekly exchange. Students should also continue to work on ST Math each night...JiJi the penguin would love to see each student complete the First Grade Journey by the end of the year...many students are very close!
Grade 2 - Everyone has adjusted well to being back in school for a full day. The students are getting to know each other and developing new friendships. Since we have daily outdoor recess and are now in school for full days, please send your child with a water bottle (preferably the straw type) each day. Drinking fountains are not available. This month we have begun our triple digit addition math unit. We will continue to practice addition and subtraction, so practicing math facts at home (with totals up to 20) is still a great way to support your child’s learning. Happy Spring!
Grade 3 - Many third graders are taking a challenge to turn off their computers, TVs, and video games for Screen-Free week! This national event takes place from May 3rd- May 9th, and is meant to remind children (and adults!) of the simple joy of having free time when you’re unplugged! Screen-Free Week isn’t about what you give up - it’s about what you get! An hour once dedicated to YouTube becomes an hour spent outside; ten minutes wiled away on social media turn into ten minutes spent doodling; a video game on a rainy afternoon is transformed into hours reading, chatting, or playing with friends.
Grade 4 - 4th Graders are certainly enjoying the spring weather, as well as learning and laughing together! Students have been immersed in the world of geometry in math and have been surprised to learn that geometry is more than just shapes. We have begun exploring angles and their measurements using protractors, classifying shapes by properties of their lines and angles as well as real world problem solving. Fourth graders have also been introduced to numerous vocabulary words and are able to look at the world around them through a different lens.
Grade 5 - Fifth graders are working hard! We are continuing to read text and respond to it in our journaling and in class. We have learned about Polio and how it closely resembles what we are going through with Covid 19. It was so interesting to compare them and to see how life changed for everyone in both cases. We are also working hard in math. We are finishing a unit on order of operations and getting ready to work on problem solving for our next big unit. Fifth graders are also getting Fun Fridays! Since our year has been so wonky, we are doing some fun things on Fridays like stuffed animal day, and we are planning other fun themes. Our fifth grade parents are sending baby pictures to our yearbook site as we start prepping a fun memory book for the end of the Klem South year for our oldest students. We are truly enjoying being back together!
