Early literacy encompasses so many components! Each month, we will explain one piece of the puzzle, and offer tips for supporting your child at home. Next up, high frequency words.
What are high frequency words? A sight word is any word that the brain recognizes automatically. High frequency words are words that are especially high leverage because of how often they are found in text. Daily instruction using Fundations Explicit, systematic, multisensory instruction (skywriting, gel boards) Teaching for mastery through repeated exposure and embedded practice How can you support your child? The Really Great Reading website has a great resource of HFW videos. Google '109 Power Words' where you can download a list of HFW that comprise 50% of the words found in children’s texts. (Feel free to email Mrs. Mylett or Mrs. Gable for a digital or paper version of the list). READ to and with your child.
