Reading with your child (continued)
Last week we shared the importance of reading together with your child. According to experts, this is clearly one of the most valuable activities you can engage in with your child to ensure his/her success at school!
This week, we want to share some questions to ask when reading. These questions will promote critical thinking and improve vocabulary and comprehension. There are three types of questions that will help your child:
- Literal questions - For example, what color is the house? Or, what type of tree is that?
- Inferential questions - For example, how might that character be feeling? Or, do you think the character likes to play sports?
- Evaluative questions - For example, do you think the character made a good decision? Or, what would you have done?
For more information about how to ask questions when reading with your child, check out these handouts from ReadAloud.org in English and Spanish.
The importance of becoming a fluent reader cannot be underestimated!
