The town was first incorporated in 1844 and is the home of Naval Air Station Whiting Field. The population was 7,045 according to the 2000 census. The population in 2004 recorded by Census Bureau of the U.S. Census Bureau was 8,044. The population estimate for 2013 was 9,323.
Milton was known under a variety of names during its growth. Most notable were "Hell-Town" (muggy and inhospitable terrain that was covered in briars, snakes, mosquitoes, thorns, and thorns) "Jernigan's The Landing", "Scratch Ankle" (due to the briars which grew on the banks of the rivers)"Hard Scrabble" and "Hard Scratch."
In the words of Florida historian Allen Morris, "Just which Milton was honored by the title is an issue. Some believe it was a contraction of an earlier Milltown; others that the name was Milton Amos, pioneer, and ancestor of the current Amos family; still others say it was John Milton. Not an English poem, rather the Civil War governor of Florida.
Milton was established in the early 1800s as a small village centered on the timber industry. Milton was originally called Scratch Ankle because of the brambles and briars which grew in the region. The other name was Jernigan's landing after Benjamin Jernigan (died April 1847) who constructed an engine-powered sawmill near what is now Locklin Lake between 1828 and 1830. Other names were Lumberton, Black Water, and Hard Scrabble, but by 1839, it was referred to as Milltown. Milton was officially incorporated as a town in 1844, one year before its Territory of Florida joined the United States as the 27th state.
During the Civil War, much of Milton was destroyed by Confederate forces as they retreated from the Union capture of Pensacola in the May of 1862. The Confederates planned to stop the town's businesses from falling into Union hands. After the Southern forces retreated, the Union troops were able to establish a small garrison in the nearby town of Bagdad where they had the base to conduct their expeditions within the area. Many Milton residents left for Alabama.
Naval Air Station Whiting Field was built in World War II with the assistance of many German prisoners of war who was sheltered in a camp situated on the site. The station was established on the 16th of July in 1943 under the direction of Rear Admiral George D. Murray and the widow of Captain Kenneth Whiting, after whom the station was named.
On the 31st of March of 1962 On March 31, 1962, an F3 tornado hit the northwest region of Milton which resulted in 17 deaths along with 100 injuries. It was the deadliest tornado in Florida up to February 22nd, 1998, where 25 people were killed in Kissimmee. The tornado was also considered to be the deadliest tornado of 1962.
