MMW List Server Message
January 16, 2015
Hello Maureen M. Welch Parents,
I hope that this message finds all of you doing well and, for some, looking forward to a long weekend. I’d like to take a moment to provide parents with information about the recent changes to the car-rider procedures. I know that this may not seem terribly stimulating or vital, but there are safety issues at hand along with rationale for the changes.
Last summer, the steps on the side of the school were dug out and new cement was used to reform the structure. As a result, the school is not permitted to put down salt to remedy icy conditions due to the new concrete. Instead, we may only use sand. When we put down sand last week, it created a precarious situation. And although there is no longer ice in that area, the sand still remains and it makes for slippery conditions.
It seems that moving the drop-off area to the front of the school is working well, and I would like to continue this new protocol indefinitely. I realize that there may be a need to tweak procedures if problems arise and I certainly welcome feedback regarding how things could improve. My only concern right now is with regard to people who are attempting to walk across the car-rider line. My hope is that all parents would use the car-rider line when dropping off and picking up their child. This appears to be the safest manner for children. But if parents choose to use the parking lot during arrival and dismissal, I strongly request two things: cross the car-rider line at the crosswalk at the front doors only and please wait for a staff member to give direction when it is safe to cross.
If there’s anything about being a principal that keeps me up at night, it is the safety of the children. This is the chief responsibility in my position, and I take it quite seriously. Thanks for your flexibility and cooperation with these new procedures.
MMW Science Fair!
The Maureen M. Welch Science Fair will take place next Wednesday, January 21st. Here is some helpful information to know:
Displays are to be set up in our school's hallways on Tuesday, January 20, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. There will be Science Fair sponsors who will be available to provide assistance.
Our school community will be able to view projects on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
Students are asked to leave their display set up at school, as classes will have the opportunity to visit the Science Fair during the day on Thursday, January 22nd.
All Science Fair displays must be removed from school by 5:30 pm on Thursday, January 22nd. Please work out a plan with your children regarding how the project/materials will be taken home (by bus or parent pick-up).

The staff and I invite parents to join us in observing Council Rock Education Week – January 20th - 22nd. Although parents are always welcome visitors to our school, we especially enjoy seeing you during the week set aside as a time to see our classrooms in operation. In our opinion, there is no better way to see your school as your child sees it.
On Tuesday (1/20), Wednesday (1/21) and Thursday (1/22), we will have visitation hours at Welch from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm. In addition, please note that Thursday, January 22nd, both parents and grandparents are invited to visit.
Also, the staff and I are also requesting that parents visit during instructional times, not during the lunch and recess periods. In prior years, parents were permitted to join the students for lunch but there were numerous problems and complaints from this practice. Thank you for your cooperation with this request. More information about Education Week can be found at the following link: Education Week - Parent Letter 2015
The students continue to seem quite excited when they are rewarded with a C.A.R.E.S. coin for acts that go beyond expectations outlined in our C.A.R.E.S. program. We hope that parents enjoy hearing about the praise that children receive for these positive behaviors. During the month of December, many students earned coins and we drew the names of five students to highlight. Congratulations to Anthony Contoudis (Mrs. McCollum), Cody Black (Mrs. Leahy), Jacob Ninan (Mrs. D’Arcy), Lanie Fleming (Mrs. Hughes), and GiGi Secules (Mrs. Wunder). These students had their names announced on Thursday morning and will have a "Pretzel Party" with me in the morning of the next PTO pretzel day.
