WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of May 1st-5th
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~HAPPY TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!! We appreciate everything you all do for our students each and every day, and we hope you have an amazing week!
~There will be various leadership opportunities within the district next year for those of you who are looking to continue to learn and grow as leaders and/or wanting to take that next step towards career advancement. There is the Teacher Leader Summer Institute designed for teachers who want to strengthen and deepen their leadership skills. There is the Aspiring Leaders Institute (ALI) for professionals who aspire to become campus and/or district leaders. There is also the Aspiring Administrator Institute for those who have completed ALI and want to continue with the program and hope to be an administrator.
~I sent an email last week to teachers about an online science safety course that should be taken by all teachers who teach science. This is for next year, so it IS something that can be taken over the summer. As long as you have completed the course before the school year begins, that is sufficient. If I find out anything differently, I will let you all know.
~Those of you attending Great Expectations this summer, that WILL count towards your GT update AND towards your 18 hours of credits needed for the school year. I verified with Karen Ray yesterday, and it can count for both.
~ Our 2nd semester PRIDE Posse party will take place on Monday, May 22nd. As like last time, members of PRIDE Posse will go to the gym during their specials time and have bounce houses and popcorn!!
Campus News
~ We have A LOT of RSVP's for Muffins with Mom this Friday. If you're here early, and can help out, we would love the assistance. We will have it set up similar to Donuts with Dads, with various places to sit in the library and hallways. We cannot use the cafeteria since we don't want to interfere with breakfast.
~STAAR testing is NEXT week! Bobby sent the schedule out yesterday. Thanks for being flexible as we work to ensure every student has the right testing environment. Monday and Tuesday there will be testing ALL around the building. It would be a great day to do some outdoor learning for younger grades, if the weather is nice! :)
~ Make sure to thank our PTA for the WONDERFUL job they did decorating the doors this weekend! It was fun to see their kiddos even helping out! :) For those who will be STAAR testing, we must have a window open for viewing. SO, you can either take the paper down and then put up after testing OR cut out the window hole, so that the paper can stay up. I didn't have the heart to tell them this on Sunday when they were decorating, so I figured we could make it work and figure something out!
~ Encourage your students to start thinking of their vocabulary word they would like to represent at our parade on May 30th. The invitation will be sent home soon explaining the parade to parents and how it will work.
~ We will be sending home "next year plans" forms to all of our students again this year. This will be to give us an idea on numbers of students and how many are planning to return. Please encourage your parents to fill them out and send in, so we can have an accurate estimate.
~ Please turn in Elk of the Month names to be ASAP. I will announce on Friday. Also, please get the forms turned into Lilly by Friday as well, so we can have those displayed!
Be Vocabulous!
Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
