What is Perseverance?
The actress Julie Andrews once said, “Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” Perseverance is when there are adversities or obstacles in the way and you work harder than before to get through them, even when you have failed 100 times. There are many examples in today's world of perseverance including in the text, Carry On, Rising From the Rubble, Perseverance and Grace as Nepal is Turned Upside Down, From Rolling Dough to Rolling in Dough, and, The Biography of Winston Churchill. We can learn from all of these examples that when are faced with challenges we should never give up and to keep persevering until we triumph.

From Rolling Dough to Rolling in Dough - Sequence
In the short story, “From Rolling Dough to Rolling in Dough,” Tom Monaghan runs into many adversities while he tries to start a pizza business. His strong ambition pushes him to fix the problem and move on to the next one. Tom Monaghan had a pizza business just off campus of Eastern Michigan University. When school ended for the summer Monaghan’s profit dropped 75%, but that didn’t stop him. Monaghan then performed all the tasks by himself and he practically lived at the shop. Tom became partners with another man who had been the first to offer free home delivery. Sadly, the partnership did not work out. Monaghan worked 100 hour weeks while his partner was buying unnecessary things. Tom’s partner asked to “dissolve” the partnership. Later he ended up suing Tom for $75,000. Tom Monaghan decided that he would pay off every penny. He was resolved to have a successful pizza business. Tom promised all his creditors and vendors that he would pay them back if they gave him enough time to get back on his feet. Most of his creditors trusted in Tom, but some filed lawsuits against him. Tom slowly built back his business and paid every dime owed. He now owns Domino’s Pizza. Tom Monaghan used his resilience to become a successful business owner.
The Noble Experiment - Cause/Effect
Branch Rickey, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers was fed up with being complacent about how African Americans were being discriminated against in baseball. On April 15th, 1947 Rickey decided Jackie Robinson would be the first African American player in the major leagues and would sign with the Dodgers. During this time period there was discrimination toward African Americans. African Americans played only in the Negro league. Rickey offered Jackie Robinson a spot on the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the color barrier in baseball. Robinson accepted and was the first African American player to play in the Major Leagues. It wasn’t easy. Jackie faced discrimination from fans, pitchers, teammates, opponents and news reporters. Pitchers threw balls to Jackie's face, news reporters wrote articles about how it was wrong for Jackie to be playing and teammates ignored him. However Jackie Robinson turned the other cheek and changed baseball forever. Today any race is allowed to play in Major League Baseball because of Jackie Robinson's courage, and determination.
Perseverance and Grace as Nepal Is Turned Upside Down - Problem and Solution
On April 25th, 2015 Nepal suffered a devastating earthquake. Many houses and buildings collapsed. Many people were digging through rubble looking for friends, family and even strangers who had been buried in debris. Others set up shelters in some of the few open spaces. Donatella Lorch writes, “Neighbors were helping neighbors. Those with motorcycles were ferrying cheap plastic canvas for tents from the shops that remained open. Many people stopped us and asked if we needed food or water. Several invited us to spend the night with them.” The community needed help and its residents came together in solidarity. In Katmandu, Nepal everyone reached out to help one another get back on their feet. The earthquake caused trouble, but the residents of Nepal came up with a solution by helping each other out.
