A Message from the Principal / Un mensaje la directora:
Dear Discovery Families,
What a strange, surreal, and sad end to year it is. We should be preparing to send our students to the next grade level and looking forward to celebrating with our 5th grade students, but due to COVID 19, it is not to be. Even though our year was unexpectedly cut short and we moved to distance learning, I believe it was still a great year. As we finish our last few weeks together, I want to thank each of you for the contributions you have made to our school community this year and to your students’ learning. You all stepped up in BIG ways to provide support for children. Whether you volunteered at school, participated with our PTO, attended school events, helped your child with homework, or became your child’s distance learning teacher, we couldn’t have done it without you. You have contributed. And for that, we thank you!!! We couldn’t do our work, and our students wouldn’t be as successful, without the support of each of you.
An Important Conversation
As we wrap up our year, I would be remiss if I didn’t take time to address the tragic events that are happening across our country and in our community in regard to racism. In a world that so often overlooks and villainizes African Americans, the tragic killings of George Floyd and so many before him has become far too commonplace. These murders and continued everyday injustices need to be more than just a topic of conversation at the dinner table. It must be a wakeup call to courageously address the biases and racism that exist in our systems and institutions.
As a white woman, I know I have privilege others don't have. I don’t have to think about what I’m wearing, what I’m doing, where I’m going, or what’s going to happen to me when I leave my house each day. However, as a school leader, I am fully committed to supporting our students of color and creating a school where all children and adults are seen, heard, loved, and supported. As a community of educators, we need to focus on identifying the things that are broken within our systems and undoing the patterns of racism and injustices that exist in practices and processes.
Our children may be seeing and hearing things they might not understand. These are heavy but important topics for our children that we must address with thoughtfulness and intention. Now is the perfect time to talk about what is happening in the world and to help your children comprehend what they are seeing and hearing as well feel empowered about how they can make a difference. Below is a guide about how to talk to your children at different ages and stages about hate and racism. We continue to be here to support you through these conversations. If you or your child are needing additional support please contact Mrs. Ching or Mrs. Goody, our Elementary Support Specialists, for additional resources.
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Every student has a voice. Every student has a story. It’s time we listen and hear them all. Change begins with us. Let’s build and heal together.
Warm regards,
Shannon Koehnen, Proud Principal
Construyamos y sanemos juntos.
Un cordial saludo,
Shannon Koehnen, la Directora
DISTRICT DEVICES/LAPTOPS / DISPOSITIVOS DE DISTRITO / PORTÁTILES:
The district has decided that students who have borrowed laptop computers from the district will be able to keep the devices during the summer. This is because there is a strong likelihood there will be some form of distance learning to start the school year next fall and students will still need computers. Please plan to keep any school devices you have, unless you are planning to move over the summer. If you are moving over the summer, please return your student's laptop to Discovery prior to June 19th. School staff are available to collect student materials at Discovery every Thursday between 10:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Due to the unusual circumstances we have experienced this spring, our teachers have recommended we keep most classes together and simply move the students up to the next grade level teacher together. We do have 8 teachers who will be "looping" up to the next grade level with their students, but staff have determined that because we will likely start school in a modified way next fall (some distance learning and some at school learning) it is important to keep our student communities together as much as possible. The thought is this will help ease the transition for our students. If you feel strongly your student would do better with a different group of students, or if you would like to share your thoughts in regard to student placement, please use this link to share your input: https://www.surveylegend.com/s/2b0t
Musical Instruments / Instrumentos musicales:
¡Gracias!

REPORT CARDS / LAS BOLETAS DE CALIFICACIONES:
At the end of the school year, teachers will not be providing typical report cards. Instead, grade level teacher teams have met and determined which priority standards were focused on during distance learning the past 2-3 months. These priority standards will be attached to 2nd trimester report cards and will be mailed home the last week of school.
