Northville Board of Education Members - We Thank You for All You Do!
January is School Board Recognition Month – a time to formally honor the crucial role Northville Public Schools Board of Education members play in the lives of our children, our schools and our community. Public education is the backbone of American society and local school boards are rooted in this tradition. They ensure that decisions on school programming are made by people elected to represent the community’s values, culture and circumstances. They are citizens whose decisions affect our children and build our communities.
The Northville Public Schools Board of Education establishes the district’s vision, mission and goals and develops policies to achieve them; strongly encourage continuous improvement in student learning; and advocates at the local, state and national level in support of public education. This work includes an endless string of meetings and school functions to attend; reams of reports, agendas, proposals and other documents to read and study; and a never-ending commitment to thoughtful consideration of the issues, balancing perspectives, and making difficult decisions that are both fiscally responsible and focused on what is best for students.
“We are fortunate at Northville Public Schools to have a Board of Education that supports our quest to open A World of Possibilities for and with each and every student that will prepare them for work and life in the 21st century,” said Northville Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. “Together with district leaders, the seven members of the Northville Board of Education develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our school district, and in turn our community. They bear the responsibility and oversight for an annual general fund budget of more than $80 million, 7,151 students, 863 employees, and 11 buildings.”
Northville Board of Education members consistently give the gift of time, expertise, heart and soul to ensuring the district has strong schools focused on meeting the needs of students, families, staff and the community, beginning with its youngest learners in the nationally accredited Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Program to its Northville High School and Cooke School Special Education Center Program graduates.
“While we make a special effort in January to show appreciation to our school board members, we realize their many contributions reflect a year-round commitment,” Ms. Gallagher added. “With this in mind, I invite all the members of our community to make a special effort during School Board Recognition Month to tell our Board of Education members that their hard work, dedication and commitment of time on behalf of our community’s children has been noticed, and is truly appreciated and valued. It can be as simple as writing a note, sending an email, making a phone call or simply saying ‘thank you’ the next time you see a Board member out in the community.”
The individuals serving Northville Public Schools and their years of service are:
· Ms. Cynthia L. Jankowski, seven years
· Mr. Matthew Wilk, six-and-a-half years
· Mr. Roland Hwang, four years
· Ms. Sarah Prescott, three years and four months
· Ms. Laurie Doner, two years
· Ms. Angela Jaafar, began four-year term January 1, 2019
· Ms. Suzanne Lynn, began four-year term January 1, 2019
Ms. Gallagher also recognized the following Board of Education members, who completed their terms on December 31, 2018:
· Mr. James Mazurek, eight years
· Ms. Ann Kalass, five years
She also welcomed new Board of Education trustees Angela Jaafar and Suzanne Lynn, elected to office in the November 6, 2018 Election along with Roland Hwang, who was elected to a second four-year term.
“I also want to express a special thanks on behalf of the entire Northville community to Ann Kalass and James Mazurek who stepped down from the Board at the end of December after completing eight and five year terms, respectively,” Ms. Gallagher said. “We appreciate Ms. Kalass’ and Mr. Mazurek’s leadership and service in support of the children and families of Northville, and recognize the impact they both have had as members of the Board of Education."

The Spring SEASON for our Robotics team is here.
Dear Silver Springs students (K-3rd Grade)
The Spring SEASON for our Robotic team is here. We will start in January and we are planing to join the Canton Plymouth High School EXPO beginning of May. It is the identical FALL Season "MISSION MOON" challenge. FIRST only offers one challenge per school year.
Parents, this program will be run by parents for our students There will be some challenges and problems to solve but the goal is to make this a fun, exciting, and educational experience for the upcoming 11 weeks the teams will be meeting.
FIRST requires for each FIRST LEGO Robotic Jr. team 2 parent volunteers. FIRST calls these parents coaches. We need 2 coaches per team of about 4 kids. Please consider to volunteer to coach a team. Every coach will get a TEAM Meeting guide that will explain all activities broken down by each session. We will show all materials on:
Thursday, DEC-13.
Just stop by at the Silver Springs Office. You can talk with the coaches from the Fall Season. We will set up the materials and some demonstrations. Some coaches will be there before and after their students Holiday party. Please just stop by or send us an email to answer all additional questions.
The Spring Season is for K-3rd Grade and it is called The FIRST JUNIOR LEGO LEAGUE JR. The WEDO 2.0 controller is what will be used to "program" the LEGO robot will be controlled by an app. It is based on drag and drop programming or your Just download the app ,start bluetooth and you are done. Parents don't need any kind of programing skills to be able to volunteer. Just the fun to let kids playing with LEGOs and to solve their own challenge.
We will meet Tuesdays at 6 -7pm at Silver Springs. the first meeting is January-15. There will be no Robotic meeting during Spring break and Teacher development day.
The costs for this program is $86. This includes the use of the LEGOs and the WEDO 2.0 controller, the registration fees for FIRST, and some basic other materials we will need to complete the season.

7-Habits Take Home Activity for January
This month’s Habit: Habit 3 Put First Things First
Activity: Color, Symbol, Image
Due Date: January 31, 2018
Habit #3 Put First Things First- "Work First, Then Play"
What this means: Focus on what is important, schedule the important things first. Don’t be a dreamer - stay focused!
“I spend my time on things that are most important.”
“I say no to things I know I should not do.”
“I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan.”
“I am disciplined and organized.”
How can I do this in my life?
1. Do your homework as soon as you come home from school.
2. Do something you have been putting off for a long time.
3. Think about your most important responsibilities. Do them first.
Great Books for Habit #3- Put First Things First
