FMHS Info Swarm

September 5, 2017

Believe it or not, the first midterm date (Wednesday, September 6th) is tomorrow. We will continue to notify students and their parents of midterm academic averages by distributing hard copy grade summary sheets each block. Mr. Christopher will send a “School Messenger” communication to all parents notifying them to expect midterm reports from all teachers on Friday, so be aware that parents should be on the lookout for these grade reports. Even though most parents have access to their student’s grades through Parent Portal, we will still continue with printing midterm progress reports for the foreseeable future.

Jackets to Follow On Twitter

Here are three examples of educators using social media for the betterment of their students and the greater learning community. They certainly aren't the only teachers using Twitter but are three good examples of teachers connecting with students, other faculty members, and a whole online community of educators through social media. They are worth following because they'll share something that will interest you, inspire you, or share a like to support you.

Parent Contact and Conferences

The school year is still early and this is a great time to reach out to parents to establish relationships. As we all know, it is best to establish mutual trust and positive relationships before problems arise in the classroom. Consider emailing or calling your students' parents with something positive about each student. This will help establish a crucial parent-teacher relationship that is necessary to work through tougher problems that may arise later.

If a student is failing your class by the midterm, please personally notify the parents by phone or email and keep a record of this contact. While parents have access to Parent Portal, many still rely on midterms and report cards. Many times it is the families of our most academically vulnerable students that rely on traditional hard copy grade reports, and too often these don't make it into the parents hands, so followup contact is crucial.

If a parent teacher conference is necessary to address academic or behavioral concerns, please schedule these through the guidance office. Let Ms. Harris or Ms. Harvey know if you would like an administrator to be present during your conference. Please be aware that it is our expectation that parents not be allowed to "stop by" your classroom for conferences. Politely inform parents of this policy should you be cornered in an impromptu conference.

Extra Help Hours

Please click here for a copy of the FMHS Extra Help Hours Template. You will need to make a copy before editing the document by selecting "file" and then "make a copy". All teachers should input their extra help dates and times, print a copy, and place it in the hallway outside their classroom door. Please have your extra help sign displayed by the end of next week (Friday, September 8th).

For those who are new to FMHS this year, these extra help times are similar to office hours provided by college professors. They are times, in addition to FLEX, that teachers are available for additional academic support and to provide makeup work and assessments.

Please note that all teachers are required to provide at least one session before school and one session after school each week. While FLEX will meet the needs of most students, we want to be responsive to the transportation constraints and availability of students who require additional opportunities.

Food for Thought

Odds and Ends

  • Extra Credit--All extra credit must be academic in nature. It cannot be tied to purchased/donated items, attendance at a school event, or unused bathroom passes.
  • Classroom Observations--Administrators have already begun observing teachers. We will be as unobtrusive as possible. Please try to make lesson plans available to observers once they enter your room.
  • Read To Succeed--New faculty members who have not received their Read to Succeed endorsement will need to complete a district led course within the first 3 years of their employment with the district. It looks as though a district led course will be an option beginning in January. I'll share more details as they come available.
  • Students In R-Wing--Please be mindful that upperclassmen students should not be allowed in R-Wing unless they have a class in that building. Even then, they should only be there during their respective R Wing class block.
  • New and Honors Course Proposals--Proposals for for new or honors courses need to be submitted via Google Classroom by Monday September 18th.

Long Range Plans and Videos

In keeping with our Google docs connectedness, I am asking all teachers to submit your LRPs and video lists by uploading your plans and submitting them through Google Classroom. Please remember that these plans are due by the end of next month—Friday, September 30th.

Here are a few guidelines regarding LRPs and videos:

  • You should submit LRPs for each prep you teach this semester.
  • It is not necessary to submit multiple LRPs for different levels of the same course. (For example, only one LRP would be required for a teacher that teaches English III CP and Honors)
  • This year all teachers are asked to submit a separate list of videos including film title, rating, and a rationale for viewing.
  • If you decide to show a video that is not on your list it must be approved by the administration before being shown to students.
  • All videos should have an accompanying assessment to demonstrate student learning. R-rated movies are not permitted.
