There are 12 days to the beginning of Advent.
In order to begin preparation for Advent with the children and families, I am presenting to you and the children the TWELVE DAYS OF WELCOME by Katie Cook.
Each day I will post a Welcoming Activity that you may want to talk with your child or children about. It is important that the children have talked with a parent/guardian or another grown up before they do any of these activities.
I hope you will participate in these activities with your child or children so they begin feeling the true meaning of Advent.
Thanks,
--Kevin
TWELVE DAYS OF WELCOME
DAY 1-November 9, 2015-Monday
- Think of someone in your class who does things that make it hard for you to like him or her. Think of something nice to do for that person. You might consider praying for him or her.
Day 2-November 10, 2015-Tuesday
- Find out about someone in your church or school who is sick and make a get-well card for him or her. Perhaps you could encourage your whole class to do this.
Day 3-November 11, 2015-Wednesday
- Make a Christmas stocking for a homebound person in your family or in your church or school.
Day 4-November 12, 2015-Thursday
- Encourage a group to go to a nursing home and sing Christmas carols for the residents.
Day 5-November 13, 2015-Friday
- Make a welcome basket for someone new in your school, church or neighborhood
- Help your neighbor with their fall yard work.
- Make a handmade Christmas ornament or gift we can share with our neighbors in the apartments next door.
- Give up one of your gifts for a child whom you know won’t get much for Christmas.
- Pray for the people in Paris

The Hour of Code is Coming - 12/7-12/13
Dear Parents,
We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and fewer students are studying it than a decade ago.
That’s why our school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
Our Hour of Code is a statement that St. Paul School is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to volunteer, reach out to local media, share the news on social media channels and consider hosting additional Hour of Code events in the community.
This is a chance to change the future of education in Louisville, KY.
See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.
Sincerely,
Kevin Brever

Kindergarten
- The Kindergarten students were very busy this week with building Santa's house while learning all about the number twelve. This number was essential to their building projects!
- First, the students made a "blueprint" for the frames of their houses using pennies. They were to arrange the pennies in three number sets of four OR four number sets of three. One student branched out from instructions a bit and made a long skinny frame of two sets of six. She and the other students quickly noted that this pattern of twelve did not fit on the blueprint paper! Mistakes are good when we learn something from them as in life!
- The students were then given red construction paper bricks to start on the frame following their blueprints. Ahhhhh! The dilemma of which way to place the bricks in making the desired shape of the house...long or tall? Also, the spacing of the brick in making the size of the house ...big or small?
- The lesson: As in life, dear children, just because you follow the blueprint, things do not always end up as planned. Instead, each house turned out a little better than planned. Each house took on the personality of the child that built it.
- The houses will be laminated and sent home with the children to be enjoyed for many years to come as a decoration or to be used as a very special Christmas card to a loved one.
- The objective was met that each child could construct a solid framework using the pattern of the number twelve. We all learned a little something extra along the way as well!
