Teacher Feature: Meet Mrs. Norris

Mrs. Laurie Norris is Kingsport City School’s eLearning Coordinator. Mrs. Norris partners with both teachers and students to help guide and support with eLearning platforms and strategies such as: Canvas, technology integration, and professional learning. Mrs. Norris is a proud graduate of Marist High School in Atlanta, Georgia before continuing her education at Berry College in Rome, GA where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She then attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia; here she received a Master’s Degree in Art Education.

Laurie has worked in advertising and design. She is also a distinguished artist, and she began her career in the field of education as an art teacher. Later, Mrs. Norris became the district-wide eLearning Coordinator; a role which Mrs. Norris EXCELs at making her the perfect partner for D-B EXCEL.

In her spare time, Laurie enjoys spending time with her husband of twenty-eight years and their three grown children. As a family, they enjoy spending time outdoors appreciating nature. She and her husband also have a passion for interior design and architecture, which is evident by the time they spend designing and constructing their cabin in the woods.

Mrs. Norris loves working with Dobyns-Bennett EXCEL for the amazing teachers and students. She says that she is proud to be part learning culture DBE provides, and DBE is very lucky to have her on our team.

DBE Online Store!

Several students have expressed interest in having a DBE store. We have arranged to have a temporary online store so students, parents, and staff can purchase DBE merchandise (Shirts, hoodies, hats, bags, etc.). The store will be open until midnight on Sunday, March 26. Most shirts have color options and a back logo option. The back logo option is our purpose statement - “We are different… On purpose… For a purpose." If you choose to have that printed on the back then there is an extra charge. If you do not want it, just select NO from the Back Logo drop down menu. Merchandise will be ordered over Spring Break and will be delivered to students when they return from break. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Shaffer at sshaffer@k12k.com.

Canvas Parent App

Kingsport City Schools has begun to implement Canvas as our learning management system. Teachers have most, if not all their coursework in Canvas. To view your student's grades in Canvas you will need to download the Canvas Parent App.

Canvas Parent enhances the potential for parents to engage in their children's education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and receive course announcements.

Canvas Parent can be used by anyone who creates an account, has been added to Canvas with an observer role, or has signed up as a parent using the web browser.

Access to Canvas Parent is managed by the student's institution.

Parents can use the Canvas Parent app on all iOS and Android devices. View the Canvas Parent Android Guide and the Canvas Parent iOS Guide.

View Student Courses and Grades

The Courses tab displays the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see course grades, the syllabus, and assignments and events. Grades display according to the course grading scheme.

View Student Assignments and Events

Assignments and events can be viewed by course or week. Parents can set reminders for a specific assignment or event, which are sent to mobile devices as push notifications.

Set Alerts for Student Activity

The app settings allow parents to set alerts for specific assignment and grade activity. Alerts are displayed in the Alerts page in the app.
