CogAT Testing
First Grade will be taking the CogAT test next week, September 25-28. We will administer the test first thing in the morning on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please make sure your child has a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast to help them focus and do their best. The test is administered whole group and is broken down into small parts.

Forgotten Lunches & Other Items
All lunches and forgotten items can be placed in the bins just outside the office. It is the students responsibility to retrieve these items.
The student can ask the teacher to check the bin if he/she has forgotten something.
We are not delivering lunches or forgotten items since it is a disruption to classAbsences and Tardies
If a student accumulates 10 unexcused absences from either full days and/or parts of days within a six month period, the school may be required to file truancy charges. A partial day’s absence includes arriving late and/or leaving early. A tardy and leaving school early can only be excused with a doctor’s note. Please remember that 3 tardies equal 1 unexcused absence.
Tardies The first Bell rings at 7:30am. Instruction begins at 7:45am. Students should be unpacked, in their seats ready to learn when the tardy bell rings at 7:45am. Our gym doors open at 7:00am and the cafeteria serves breakfast from 7:15-7:40 am daily. It is important to allow for morning traffic and weather when dropping off your child.
Excused Absence Notes The school must receive a written, signed note from the parent/guardian within 3 days of your child returning to school. Emails are not accepted by the state/school. If the note is not received within 3 days, the absence is unexcused. Extended absence due to illness will require a doctor’s statement/letter.
To avoid truancy Court, parents/guardians are notified by Mrs. Armstrong when a child has an attendance concern. If attendance continues to be a concern, written notification will also be sent home as required by law.

What Are We Learning?
Math
Our next unit in math with be about using fives and tens as a strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Language Arts and Social Studies
In Language Arts we have been learning about types of sentences and the end marks that we use. We've learned about nouns, plural nouns and irregular plural nouns. Our next focus will be verbs. We are focusing on identifying parts of a story (setting, characters, problem, solution) along with retelling the beginning, middle, and end of a story. In writing, we're focusing on developing sentences and stories with a beginning middle and end.
In social studies, we have been learning about U.S. Symbols and the Pledge of Allegiance. We are discussing why these symbols are so important to our country and exploring the meaning behind why we say the Pledge of Allegiance. Monday was Constitution Day and we discussed the importance of this document. We are closing our unit with reiterating the importance of good citizenship at school, home and in our communities.
