The Laws of Belief
SPARTON PRIDE
Special Thanks to Kelly's Fourth Grade Class for collaboratively creating the slogan Spartans Believe Spartans Achieve! It fits in so very well with this year's theme: Believe. We love it!
I BELIEVE YOU MATTER!!
In the book Even on Your Worst Day, You Can Be a Student's Best Hope, Manny Scott states, “Right now, with whatever limitations you have, you have the power to change someone's life.” Think about this for a moment. With whatever limitations you have, you have the power to change someone’s life. How does this statement meld with our theme of believing in relationships? Can you allow yourself to overcome limitations and change someone’s life for the better? Mr. Scott goes on to decipher the phrase “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Who you are, what lessons you model, your daily interactions and relationships with students allow you to increase students’ thirst and change someone’s life. For another moment, think about what you can do next week to increase students’ thirst for learning, for knowledge, for wisdom. Teach with excellence. Prepare for your performance.
Mr. Scott gives several examples of ways to prepare for your performance.
Prepare Your Voice: Warm up your voice! Like a runner before a race, warm up those vocal muscles before school. Sing in the shower, the car, or your classroom before your students arrive.
Prepare Your Mind: Find your focus. Preparing for the work ahead of you begins with asking the right questions in determining what to focus on; this focus determines how you feel at any given moment. Try these questions (I’ve filled in my own answers just for fun):
• What am I grateful for today? I am grateful for a supportive family at home and at work
• Who loves me today, and whom do I love? My husband and children love me. My mom and dad, brother and sister, and extended family love me. My friends love me. And I love them.
• What am I proud about in my life today? I am proud of my children- who they’ve become, their successes and their ability to overcome struggles. I am proud of my family- we support each other in years of change (this is a big year for us… two seniors, a freshman, and Mom has a new job!)
• What is the most important thing I need to get done today? I need to connect to people. I need to walk in and out of classrooms, conversing with students and staff every step of the way. I need to build relationships.
Prepare Your Body: Motion can change your emotions. If finding focus does not have you feeling ready to teach, MOVE! Try a short walk, a set of stairs, or core workout in your teacher’s chair or at the stoplight. Energize!
Prepare Your Heart: When your voice, mind, and body are ready, position your heart to speak, teach and serve. Find what works for you, your kaizen. Top 20 Teachers refers to kaizen as ‘continuous improvement in all aspects of life’ (p. 117.) Maybe your kaizen is working out, going for a walk, reading a book, crafting, baking, or yoga. Get yourself centered before you start your day.
Create and sustain good habits. They will keep you at your best. You will be a survivor. You will be at your best. You will inspire a thirst for knowledge and wisdom that will last a lifetime. You will create your own symphony. I believe in YOU.
