Character Lab
This week in Character Lab, students are taking a closer look at Empathy. They will be learning the 5 steps of empathy and applying it to scenarios. We hope to equip our students with some tools to help them find more connections within their world. Take a look at what your students will be doing!
Grades 3-5
Students will watch the quick intro video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzPMMSKfKZQ to gain some background knowledge about empathy.
Then, they will be introduced to “ The 5 steps to empathy”
Step 1: Watch and listen:
Students will explore understanding emotions and the message the other person is trying to send. They will explore what verbal and non-verbal body language is as well as the saying “Name it to tame it”
Step 2: Remember:
Students will remember when they too felt or experienced this. They will start making connections. Students will watch the video clip of some basic emotions as noted in this clip from “Inside Out.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHKQHkoWNyU
Students will talk about how they react to the video, mirror neurons, and how past experiences contribute to empathy.
Step 3: Imagine:
If they haven’t experienced it, what would it be like for them? Students will understand that they might not respond the same as you or another person. There might be more than one emotion.
Step 4: Ask How:
Ask how the other person is feeling and communicate what you are noticing. This is a great communication skill. How another person responds to an emotion, might be different than you. Clarifying this can help you understand their experience better. Practice: “You seem sad.” “I see you are crying are you sad?”
Step 5: Show you care:
Use your words and actions to show you care. EX: “Would you like a hug?” “Can I do something to help you?” “I can see this is hard for you, I am here for you.” “I see you are angry,
Students will watch the quick clip of how to respond to another person’s emotion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgQBPSECgZg
Grades K-2
Students will be introduced to empathy with this video clip: https://youtu.be/9_1Rt1R4xbM
Students will then go through the emotions from inside out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHKQHkoWNyU
The students will practice and recognize emotions in others in others through a freeze face game. With the help of Mr. Plyler, the students will sing along to the tune of “The hokey pokey” but using emotions. Students will then be able to identify and explore empathy through working and creating their “Empathy Book.” Be on the lookout for this one coming home after your child attends Character lab!
Parent Challenge:
Take some time to read this quick article about how we as parents and teachers can help develop empathy within our children. Through the hustle and bustle of the our lives, these tips can help reinforce the great work you are already doing to instill empathy within children.
