AA Similarity
AA similarity can be used because mirrors reflect the image at the same angles. The person's eye saw the top of the flagpole in the mirror. Mirrors show reflected images at the same angle and make two congruent angles because of AA similarity.
Pencil Person Technique
The pencil person technique uses estimation of the height of a person compared to an object. We had a six foot tall person stand next to the flag pole and held a pencil in front of their face to make the pencil look like the same size as the person from far away. After we made the pencil look the same height as the person, we just kept moving the pencil up to the top until we found the estimated height.
