Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
February 5th-9th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will continue learning about the sun. We will cover Lesson 2 (Day and Night) and Lesson 3 (Seasons). Next week we will review by taking place in a Science Court Trial. There will be a quiz over Lessons 1-3 on Friday the 16th.
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will start our unit on Government. The students will learn about the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution. There will be a short quiz over this lesson on Friday 9th.
- Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: This week we are continuing our new unit, Reading History – The American Revolution, specifically starting to research history to help us write our conglomerate! We will continue our writing unit, Bringing History to Life, specifically focusing on chapter 2 of our informational writing book (conglomerate). Spelling tests will be given this week starting on Tuesday and ending on Friday. Your child has a tab of their scheduled test day in his/her spelling notebook. Spelling homework is due on their test day. In math this week we will start our measurement unit. We will start this week off with elapsed time. We will have a quiz on Friday.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in Math we will start our unit on measurement. We will start with how to read a clock and how to calculate elapsed time. A quiz on this will be next Monday 12th. In ELA, we will be looking at primary and secondary sources. Students will also be finishing their novels (due next Friday 16th) and learning how to compose TDA: Text Dependent Analysis responses. There will be a spelling test on Friday. Also, Mrs. Holloway will be coming in to help the kids on a special project for Valentine's Day. Students will need to have their favorite book in class this Friday so they can start the project.
Valentine's Day is Next Wednesday!
In Wednesday folders this week, I'll be sending home a class list and information about Valentine's Day. Please let me know if you have any questions after seeing the hand out.
STEAM Night is Thursday 6-7:30
Come join us on Thursday for a night full of science, technology, engineering, arts, math, and football! :)

Book Fair is February 2nd-9th
Children will have a designated time during this week to shop at the book fair. They can also bring money before school or during recess to shop. The book fair will also be open during STEAM Night on Thursday.
Other Information:
- If you haven't already, please send in the permission slip and $17 for the Matthews Playhouse/Star Lab field trips.
- We are starting a two week long unit on the Winter Olympics, beginning with a classroom opening ceremonies on Friday. I'm encouraging the students to watch some of the Olympics each night or catch the highlights on radio, tv, magazines. This will be a great chance to incorporate all the subjects into lessons that show teamwork, sportsmanship, and national pride.
- Snow makeup day is Monday February 19th.
- Peace Love and Pastries will be February 14th from 7:10-8:00 am in the cafeteria.
- Chick-fil-a Spirit Night is this Tuesday, the 6th, from 5-8 pm.
- Barnes and Noble Day for FMES is February 24th. (More information to come)
