Third Grade Inventors and Innovators
The third grade students have been working hard to come up with creative ideas for an innovation/invention that serves a purpose or fills a need. This project was intended to inspire curiosity, creativity, and passion to prepare students for our ever changing world. All of the students are excited about their inventions and can't wait to present their ideas to our Shark Tank Panel.
We began this unit by researching other inventors and illustrators. After that the students brainstormed problems and needs that people have. From there, they began to brainstorm ideas to help solve these problems or needs. They began working on their Display boards using Google Docs and created their models. Students have also been busy practicing their public speaking skills by using the video response app called RECAP. Students are now beginning their persuasive speech that they will use to convince the judges to invest in their idea during our Shark Tank episode.
Students will present their innovations/inventions to a panel of “Shark Tank Members”(inspired by ABC’s Shark Tank), who will judge their projects and decide whether or not to “invest”. (Fake money of course!).
Our event will tank place on Wednesday, January 25th in the Cliffwood School Cafeteria.

Community Service: The Second Grade Works Hard to Help Soul Kitchen
After researching and learning about Soul Kitchen, the students worked in groups to brainstorm possible community service projects in each school. Then they had to create a video or go in person to convince the principals that their idea was the best. After principals approved the ideas, students began planning for the project. They created flyers using Google Docs, created and prepared to read morning announcements to promote their project, created and designed the display/project.
In Ravine Drive Students held a Guess the Candy Contest. Students, Staff and parents were encouraged to pay a $1.00 take a guess to determine the amount of candy in a jar. The winner won the jar of candy. Ravine Drive raised $229.00 to donate to Soul Kitchen.
In Strathmore School, the students designed rubber bracelets to sell to the students and staff. The bracelets say "BE GENEROUS...SOUL KITCHEN". We have already raised $260.00 that will be donated to Soul Kitchen.
In Cliffwood School , students are making friendship bracelets that they will sell for a $1.00 to the students, staff and parents of Cliffwood School. The students worked, worked and worked some more to make enough bracelets for all the students! Today was only our first day of the sale and we have already raised $211.00 for Soul Kitchen!
I would also like to thank Mrs. Hickey's G&T class for helping to make the friendship bracelets. It takes many people to help make projects like these successful! We can't wait to see all the time and effort pay off.
