FUSD students collaborate with Master Chorale of Flagstaff in Venus & Adonis
Marshall Elementary, Sechrist Elementary School, and Flagstaff High School students had a great opportunity to collaborate with the Master Chorale of Flagstaff and the Baroque Chamber Orchestra on a Valentine’s Baroque Opera with Dance production Venus & Adonis under their season title, World of Love on February 5 at Coconino High School.

A Message from our Superintendent
Make up days for FUSD due to inclement weather
This has been quite a winter, with Flagstaff receiving over twice as much snowfall as last year. To date, the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) has canceled school for a total of 10 days, so far, during this winter season.

CHS wrestler, Cooper French, wins third state title
Coconino High School senior, Cooper French, won his third straight wrestling state championship last week in Phoenix. French beat Safford High School’s Kaleb Cordova in the 165-pound division to win the title. The Coconino High School (CHS) Panthers placed eighth overall at the state tournament.

FUSD “A” rated schools receive banners to display
Flagstaff Unified School District Superintendent, Michael Penca, presented banners to FUSD’s “A” rated schools who achieved A-Rating during the 2021-2022 school year.
The Arizona State Board of Education released the 2021-2022 A-F School Letter Grades for all public schools statewide on October 31, 2022. This accountability system measures year-to-year student growth, proficiency in English language arts, math, and science, the academic achievement of English learners, and college and career readiness indicators.
The “A” rated schools include DeMiguel Elementary School, Marshall Elementary School, Puente de Hózhó Elementary School, Sechrist Elementary School, Flagstaff High School, and Summit High School.

KinderCamp students participate in a basketball clinic thanks to a grant from the Phoenix Suns in conjunction with United Way. The clinic was held at Kinsey and Thomas Elementary Schools in June 2022. The grant has helped students stay active and grow a love for basketball.
KinderCamp registration is now open
KinderCamp Program is scheduled for this summer from June 6-30, 2023, and is free for children to attend who are entering Kindergarten. Students must be five years old before August 31, 2023.
Sara Owen, the KinderCamp coordinator, explained the program is a targeted intervention program that supports successful transitions for students going into kindergarten. KinderCamp classrooms are filled on a first come/first served basis and notification of your child’s qualification status will be emailed to you in May.
This year, KinderCamp will be held at Kinsey Elementary School and Thomas Elementary School. To have your child considered at attend KinderCamp, you must fill out an ELEYO registration form at https://fusd1.ce.eleyo.com AND register your student for kindergarten by May 1, 2023.

Thomas Preschool had an amazing time hosting their families for a classroom art show on February 2, 2023.

2023-2024 FUSD Preschool waiting list
The FUSD Preschool Program waiting list is now open. Applications are accepted on a first-come/first-serve basis. The program is age-specific for 3- and 4-year-olds and children must be “of age” for that class by August 31 of that school year.
The program runs for four days a week and are half days, the program does not offer any full-day options. The program is tuition-based and costs $200 per month, which is due on the 13th of each month, regardless of absences or holidays. Income-based scholarships are available.
Students should demonstrate age-appropriate communication, and play skills and attend to adult-led activities. Four-year-old students should be potty trained.

The bottom two photos are of the Boys Soccer Rivalry Game between Flagstaff High School and Coconino High School on February 3, 2023.
Flagstaff High School Girls Soccer team made it to the Semifinals of the 4A State Championship tournament but concluded their season against Walden Grove.
