## And it begins...week 2! :)

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend spent with family and friends. We are back to school embarking on our second week in 1st grade. We will be continuing to learn what it's like to be a first grader. We will be continuing our practice of our classroom routines, classroom rules, and lunch time/recess routines and behaviors. The students did a wonderful job last week and adjusted very well. I'm so happy to their teacher! :)

## What SPECIALS do we have this week?

Tuesday- Day 5: Art

Wednesday- Day 6: Computers

Thursday- Day 1: Gym

Friday- Day 2: Library

## What will we be learning this week?

In math we will be identifying squares and rectangles based upon their qualities, and identifying the pairs of numbers that make up the numbers 4 and 5 (3+1=4, 2+2=4, 4+1=5, 3+2=5, etc.) The students will have math homework each night this week. I know they will be excited! :) The homework is posted on our class website.

We will be beginning our word sorts from Words Their Way this week. I will be teaching the students how to do a word sort, so we will be doing this as a whole class this week. The sorts will be focusing on beginning consonant sounds.

In shared reading this week we will be learning how to choose books and take care of books. These lessons will create awareness for the students as to the importance of books. The students will be able to share what kinds of books they like to read and what they look for in a book as they choose one from a library shelf. The students will also gain an understanding of how to treat books and what to do if they notice a book is ripped. Ask your child about the "book hospital" in our classroom. :) The students will also begin to practice how to read independently and how to read with a partner.

This week on Day 6 we will have our first class meeting. Class meetings will be a time where we will discuss as a class various situations/topics that our class might be dealing with. For example, how to treat each other with respect, how to work together in partners/small groups, how to handle conflict with friends on playground, in classroom, on school bus, etc. This week we will be talking about how to listen when others are talking during class. Please ask your student to tell you what they learned in our class meeting this week.

## Thank you!

I enjoyed meeting you at Back to School Night! Thank you for coming out! I look forward to meeting those that were unable to attend. I'm looking forward to a great school year! :)
