Nazareth Protestant Community
February 15, 2018
Yesterday, as another shooting took the lives of 17 people, we find ourselves confronted once again with our mortality, with the seeming existence of evil and sin, with the task of once again integrating this new and violent reality into our daily functioning. But how do we do that? As Lenten people on the journey to the cross, how do we begin to confront the kinds of systemic evils that exist in our world?
We pray. Yes, there is always a time to pray. But Miroslav Volf said, "There is something deeply hypocritical about praying for a problem that you are unwilling to help resolve." So what do we do? There are things we can do. We can begin to address toxic masculinity. We can write to our congress people and ask for gun laws to be addressed. We can start with the people around us. We can start by paying attention to one another and supporting one another and not staying silent when we notice the pain of others around us. We start by being willing to do something, even if we don't know what to do. And we move forward, praying, and acting, and working to affect change.
My heart is broken today for the families who lost loved ones yesterday, for the families who will lose loved ones today, and tomorrow, and the day after that. Lent is about being honest about who we are and the reality of our lives and the world. And it leads us to the cross and to the tomb, where the impossible becomes possible. Death conquered. New life awaiting.
Blessings,
Nadia

A Discussion on Faith and Science:
The Center for Spirituality invites you for lunch and an academic reflection on the intersection of science and religion. On Tuesday, February 20th, Dr. Matthew Temple will be leading us in a critical examination of questions like: "Would Jesus have made a good biologist?" and "How can science and faith be vigorous companions in seeking truth?" The presentation and discussion will attempt to take a critical, yet lighthearted look, at how science and religious faith are in relationship with one another.
Join us Tuesday February 20th at 12pm in the community room, GAC 151. This lunch discussion is open to all. No need to RSVP. If you are planning to bring a class, please email the Center for Spirituality (spirituality@naz.edu) to let us know for the purpose of ordering food.

Harvesters Christian Fellowship Group -- Fridays at 6 pm
Iron Sharpens Iron.
Harvesters is intended to build community among Christians at Nazareth College. In fellowship, we encourage and sharpen one another in our constant pursuit of intimacy with God. We are called to ‘harvest the field’ that God has placed us in. By responding to this call with passionate worship, prayer, and service, we strive to bring revival and unity to our campus and beyond. Ultimately, our vision is to be our generation’s demonstration of an Acts church - a growing and maturing body of believers living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We meet every Friday starting Friday September 1st in the GAC Community Room (first floor). Our time together consists of prayer, worship, and a study of scripture. If you enjoy pizza, ping pong, and healthy discussion, come join us! All are welcome.
"The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." - Matthew 9:37
"Don't you have a saying, 'It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." - John 4:35
