Message from Principal Kenny
Dear Staff, Students and Parents/Guardians:
Good Afternoon. We all are experiencing uncharted territories as we navigate a world with COVID-19. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and concerns with me.
We are, at this point, taking all of our direction from the local Board of Health, state officials, federal agencies and school board officials. According to our local Board of Health, there are no suspected or confirmed cases in Leicester, even though the number of diagnosed cases around the state has continued to rise. We have closed our buildings for a minimum of one to two weeks to increase the cleaning of high contact areas and support the need to practice social distancing. Access to the school building is restricted at this time, as we are trying to keep it sanitized and germ-free. We will send information about access to school and any on-line schooling as soon as possible.
Last Tuesday, the Governor declared a state of emergency, which has led us to cancel or postpone any large-scale community events. That began with the postponement of this past weekend's drama performance and the cancellation of all other after school and evening events until further notice (We will send information on how to obtain reimbursements for the previously scheduled trip to New York City etc).
In the meantime, please continue to check email, follow Twitter @LHS_Kenny and our newly added COVID-19 Informational Website where you can find official statements and additional resources from the Leicester Public Schools. This website can be accessed from either the district and school pages, or directly at http://leicester.k12.ma.us/about/covid-19.
If you or your family need anything during this time, please feel free to email Ms. Kenny directly. I have contact with and access to many resources.
Until then please stay home, be healthy, and support your family and neighbors. We are in this together and will make our way through this as a school community.
Ms. Kenny
Electronics Cleaning
A number of you have asked me about the best way to clean your Chromebooks. If you want to clean your Chromebook, please ask for help from a parent and follow the directions below.
The best product to clean electronics with is distilled water and a 60% solution of isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber cloth. Most recommendations I have seen for LCD screens is a 50% solution. You can use this on nearly all devices and surfaces and let air dry. Most of us don't have this product in our homes, so please see the list of additional products you should and shouldn't use below.
DO NOT USE the following products to clean or disinfect devices.
- Hand sanitizer
- Aerosol sprays
- Consumer products for bathrooms and kitchens
- Products with ammonia or vinegar
- Magic erasers or scrubby sponges
Recommended Cleaning and Disinfecting Procedures
Cell Phones
Cell phones and iPads are typically more rugged than other electronics such as Chromebooks. You can use Clorox wipes to clean these devices and most device cases. If you have a porous case such as leather, really don't have a good solution for you, but I will tell you that a Clorox wipe probably won't ruin it the first time you use it.
Chromebooks
Firstly, there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting your device. I see a lot of Chromebooks and believe me, most students Chromebooks could use a good cleaning. There are different precautions you need to take for cleaning the LCD screen and cleaning the rest of the device. If you want to make it easy on yourself, just use a microfiber cloth on the whole device, because it is necessary to use on the screen.
Cleaning your Chromebook
In many cases, cleaning your device will suffice.
- Turn your device off.
- Using a damp microfiber cloth with plain water, wipe down the case, keyboard, and LCD screen and remove any built-up dirt or smudges. You may use a small amount of mild liquid dish soap to remove more stubborn substances. Use clean water on a separate cloth to remove any leftover cleaners. Middle School student Chromebooks have sealed keyboards, meaning, water will not penetrate the keyboard even if water is dumped on it (there is no reason to ever dump any liquid on your devices to test this). High school students and most teaching staff do not have devices with sealed keyboards so a damp cloth is best.
- Allow the device to dry completely before you use it.
Disinfecting your Chromebook
Disinfecting your Chromebook should be an as-needed task. Applying any disinfectant solution routinely will damage your device.
- Turn your device off.
- Using a Clorox wipe, wipe down the case, keyboard and LCD screen. Use clean water on a separate microfiber cloth to clean the LCD screen afterward.
- Allow the device to dry completely before you use it.
