About Element 23
Vanadium is a silvery element.; It was discovered in 1830 by Andres Manuel The name origin comes from After Vanadis which means Scandinavian goddess. Vanadium can be found Russia and South Africa are the world's largest producers of vanadium. Large reserves are also found in the U.S., Canada, and China. Titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy is used in jet engines and for high-speed aircraft. Vanadiumfoil is used in cladding titanium to steel.Vanadium-gallium tape is used in superconducting magnets. Vanadium pentoxide is used in ceramics and as a catalyst for the production of sulfuric acid. Some similar elements are Zirconium, Tantalum and Dubnium. Vanadium at 95% purity costs about 20 USD per pound and at 99.9% purity costs 100 USD an ounce. Natural vanadium is a combination of two isotopes, 50V (0.24 percent) and 51V (99.76 percent).50V is slightly radioactive, having a half-life of > 3.9 x 1017 years. There are nine other recognized unstable isotopes of vanadium. Vanadium and its compounds are toxic and so should be handled with care. The maximum allowed concentration of vanadium oxide (V2O5) dust in air is about 0.05 per eight-hour shift in a 40-hour work week.
