Tūranga Library Visit - Monday 13th March

Tomorrow, Monday 13th March, our Room 5 - 8 students will be traveling by bus to town to the Tūranga Library to take part in two 90-minute workshops and a Hīkoi/Walk of the CBD to deepen their knowledge of Aotearoa New Zealand History.

The weather forecast for tomorrow morning is light rain, clearing to fine in the afternoon so it would be good if they had a jacket with them for the morning when taking part in the planned Hīkoi.

Walking/Sports shoes are also recommended.

Throughout Term 1, students in the junior and senior school have been unpacking and learning about the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum.

The junior school has been learning how to retell a story from the past, while understanding that different people may tell the same story differently. They are also being taught to use various historical sources, including mātauranga. The main focus is on developing a critical understanding of history and its impact on the present.

In the senior school, students are learning how to use historical sources, with a focus on mātauranga Māori sources, to gather evidence and answer questions about the past. They are also being taught to recognize missing views and how this may impact mahinga kai. Students are encouraged to identify the attitudes and values that motivated people in the past and compare them with current attitudes and values. This enables them to develop a critical understanding of history and its impact on society today.

Tomorrow, Monday 13th March, our Year 5 - 8 students will be traveling by bus to town to the Tūranga Library to take part in two 90-minute workshops to deepen their knowledge of Aotearoa New Zealand History.

While the Year 5 and 6 students take part in workshop one, the Year 7 and 8 students will do a City Hīkoi Walk along the Avon River and explore many of the sites of cultural significance in and around the city centre before looping back to the Tūranga Library. We will then head over to the Margaret Mahy Playground for lunch before the groups swap over for Workshop two beginning at 12:30 pm.

Buses should return to school at approximately 2:30pm

Parents and caregivers are more than welcome to accompany their children on the excursion to the Tūranga Library and City Hīkoi Walk. It can be a great opportunity to learn alongside their children and gain insight into the topics covered in the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum.
