ASPIRE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING SERVICES
There is an increasing need to support students with mental health concerns nationwide. The Royal Highlanders are excited to welcome counseling services by ASPIRE, thanks to Mr. John Poleno and his team. These small groups provide students the opportunity to learn, express themselves in confidentiality, and to benefit from the support of peers.
1) Vaping, Alcohol or Drugs
2) Socio-emotional Group: Addressing the impact of stress or anxiety by strengthening student resiliency through social support
You you or someone you know could benefit, please provide me their name and contact information HERE https://forms.gle/YqukzdEt2HhMwYQs9. Recommended students from this list will meet with a school counselor for more information and to determine the appropriateness of services.
SAT AND PSAT AT ROYAL HIGH SCHOOL - FALL 2019
On October 16th, 2019, Royal is proud to provide an opportunity for students to take the SAT (12th grade students) and the Preliminary SAT - National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (11th grade students). Space is limited for both tests. This will take place at RHS during the school day (specific times and classroom locations will be announced). Interested seniors should sign up through Naviance following the directions below. For questions, contact Mr. Dobson or your student's counselor. Mrs. Hong in the College and Career Center can also provide assistance.
SENIORS: SAT REGISTRATION CLOSED (All seats filled)
Confirmation email and information will be sent this week to those registered.
Cancellation Information: If a student decides to cancel the SAT exam they will be charged a restocking fee administered by the College Board. The restocking fees are $32.25 (with essay) and $23.75 (without essay).
Additional Registration Information: Senior students will register through Naviance and then be referred to the ASB Office to pay the testing fee. There you will also pick up your SAT student handbook. (In addition, if you are a student who qualifies for free and reduced lunch, you must confidentially bring your Free and Reduced Lunch Letter to Mrs. Hodges in the Counseling Office to receive the reduced testing fee.)
JUNIORS: TO REGISTER FOR THE PSAT
On Wednesday, October 16th we will use part of the school day to test many of our juniors with the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The PSAT serves several purposes. It is a practice test to the SAT, provides the school with data to help students determine AP readiness, and it serves as a qualifier for 11th graders to be identified for the National Merit Scholarship.
The cost of the PSAT exams is covered by Royal High School for all participants (only 200 spots are available for the Junior Class/Fall 2019 PSAT).
The window for 11th grade students to register for the PSAT is open until October 7th, or until the first 200 people register. Students who would like to sign up should follow the steps below. (Freshmen and Sophomores will have the opportunity to take the PSAT 9/10 exam in second semester.)
Log into Naviance. Can also access from RHS Homepage.
- Click "About Me"
- Click "My Surveys"
- Click "Surveys Not Started"
- Click "PSAT Sign-ups"
Junior students will register through Naviance. The first 200 students registered will be notified to report to ASB to pick up the testing booklet.

DRESS CODE
In order to promote a safe and non distracting learning environment, Royal High School will be enforcing our Dress Code. Students are asked to wear clothing that is appropriate for the school or work setting and should be appropriate, modest in nature and non distracting to the learning environment (BP/AR 5132).
● State law requires that footwear be worn at all times.
● Students must wear an appropriate shirt at all times. Including during sports practices. Examples of inappropriate shirts are: sleeveless undershirts, tube-tops, see-through tops, backless tops, strapless tops, or low-cut or stomach baring (midriff) tops, and muscle shirts.
● Clothing that advertises or promotes alcohol, drugs, violence, or other inappropriate activity is not acceptable.
● Undergarments of any kind should not be visible.
● Shorts and skirts are to be at fingertip length.
Violation of the Student Dress Code will result in requiring the student to change to more appropriate attire (physical education clothes or school spiritwear). Additional school consequences will be given to repeat offenders.

FOOD DELIVERIES FOR STUDENTS
Attention Parents and Students:
Please be aware that food deliveries from outside vendors such as Door Dash, Uber Eats and Grub Hub will not be allowed to deliver food to the Royal campus unless it is during our scheduled lunch time. Students may not leave class to receive food deliveries. Food may only be delivered to the front office and not delivered over the fence or through the gates. The office will not accept fountain drinks or any drink that does not have a sealed lid. The student's name must be clearly labeled on the food item. Failure to follow these guidelines will jeopardize any food delivery services at Royal High School.
ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARKING LOT
Attention Parents and Students: Please do not use the St. Rose of Lima Parking Lot to drop off and pick up your students. They have asked us to relay that their parking lot has had very heavy traffic and their parents can't get in to pick up their students from their own school. You can meet your students off of Arcane in the back of the school, on Hudspeth to the East of the school, or in either parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
FEATURED COLLEGE
THIS WEEK: University of Denver

Enrollment: 5,486
Acceptance Rate: 58%
DETAILS: The only major midsized private university between Tulsa and the West Coast. DU’s campus in residential Denver is pleasant, and brochures tout Rocky Mountain landscapes and healthy lifestyles. A haven for skiing enthusiasts and business majors, DU has gotten more selective in recent years.
The oldest private university in the Rocky Mountain region, the University of Denver is where former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice earned her B.A. in political science at age 19 and later returned for a Ph.D. in international studies. Her mentor was Soviet specialist Joseph Korbel, father of former secretary of state Madeline Albright. Thus, it’s not surprising that DU boasts strong programs in political science, international studies, and public affairs. Many students, however, opt for DU’s business program, and the campus location offers ample opportunities for networking, skiing, and taking in the beautiful Colorado landscape. “Students bring their exploration of the world into the classroom by being inquisitive and curious about their chosen fields,” observes a senior.
DU’s 125-acre main campus is located in a comfortable residential neighborhood only eight miles from downtown Denver and an hour east of major ski areas. Architectural styles vary and materials include brick, limestone, Colorado sandstone, and copper. Nearby Mount Evans (14,264 feet) is home to the world’s loftiest observatory, a DU facility available to both professors and students. A new facility for the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science recently opened, serving as a hub for interdisciplinary, STEM-related research and scholarship.
Under the general education requirements, undergraduate students choose from a series of courses from the Common Curriculum that emphasize writing and rhetoric, language, analytical inquiry, and scientific inquiry. “At first I thought, ‘Who wants to take these science, art, and English classes?’” explains a business major. “But now that I’ve completed the core, I feel better about myself and my world knowledge.” University rules stipulate that all core courses must be taught by senior faculty. Core courses are supplemented by a first-year seminar (limited to 15 students) and an advanced seminar, which serves as a capstone to the curriculum model. As part of their orientation, freshmen spend 10 hours with a small group of students and a professor discussing a collection of essays by prominent writers.
DU Student Perspective: “Professors desire to become more like mentors to their students, rather than ‘that one professor who taught that one class.'"
