Lower Campus' Weekly Update
March 5-9, 2018
Dream Box Update
Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind- Engage to Build Cognitive Capacity
1- Build attention skills- There are 2 types of attention skills; hardwired and reflexive and learned and earned. Read more from the chapter on the Google drive to learn more.
2- Teach problem solving and critical thinking
3- Train working memory- A strong working memory is critical to academic success. When students go through a full psycho-educational testing battery, this is one area that is assessed. Unfortunately, low socio-economic students tend to have poorer working memories than their higher socio-economic peers.
4- Develop processing speed- Processing speed is "the act of working with or modifying something." These skills include collecting, sorting, summarizing, calculating, organizing and analyzing.
5- Foster self-control
I will scan and post this chapter on the Google Drive for you to read more about each factor and solutions you can use in the classroom.
"Average teachers teach a skill until students get it right; highly effective teachers work with student until they can't get it wrong."
