CDS Middle School
November 9th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
As the weather cools and the leaves change colors, CDS Middle School remains as vibrant and active as ever! On Wednesday the middle school and high school came together in Dalton Hall to enjoy an amazing production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We were very grateful to welcome professional actors all the way from the United Kingdom to perform for us. Although there were only six actors, they were able to bring the play to life and the result was very entertaining! In fact, the majority of our 5th and 6th graders chose to stay until the end of the play even though we had given them permission to leave at intermission. I hope the experience will be something they remember for a long time. We look forward to inviting the American Drama Group Europe back again next year.
This week also saw the CDS Fall Book Fair. Many students walked away with great reads to keep their imaginations firing during the winter months. I want to thank our MS and FP parent associations for selling snacks and second hand uniforms during the event!
Next week we're excited to begin our annual BookCon! Ms. Choo and Ms. Carley have prepared some exciting activities for this week-long celebration of reading. I invite you to learn more about this event and other exciting happening at CDS Middle School within the newsletter.
Have a great week!

Grade 7's Self-Determined Learning Brainstorm Session
This week, in 7th grade SDL, we were lucky enough to have the entirety of the Middle School teaching team help our students brainstorm through their topics of choice for an upcoming research project.
This was a fantastic opportunity for students to present their ideas and gain a variety of perspectives from their teachers. Students were clearly engaged as teachers provided invaluable insight to further their research.

Autobiography Mind Map for G7 in Korean class
7학년의 Term 2 프로젝트는 자서전 쓰기입니다. 그 첫번째 과정으로 마인드맵 만들기를 하고 있습니다. 자기의 삶에서 가장 중요한 의미가 있는 사람, 물건, 경험 세 가지를 생각하며 마인드맵을 만들고 있습니다. 자서전 쓰기 활동은 자기에게 가장 큰 영향을 주었던 것들이 무엇이 있는지 돌아보는 소중한 시간이 될 것입니다.
7th Grade's Term 2 project is writing an autobiography. The first step is creating a mind map. We are creating a mind map thinking about the most meaningful existences in our life; people, items, experiences. This project will be a precious opportunity for students to look back on what has affected them the most in their lives even though they are still young.

Peer Reading time in MS Chinese Bridge
Reading is an effective way to learn languages. Since we have 70-minute class periods this school year, in the MS Chinese bridge program class we use fifteen minutes for reading time each day.
Students practice reading on a free level-based Chinese reading website in their own spare time. They figure out the new vocabulary and their favorite sentences in their reading. Also, they are encouraged to draw what they have read. Then they read aloud to themselves, parents, and friends. After they complete their reading, they fill in their reading logs.
