Road Unit
Dear Parents
Who knew making roads could be such fun! Our children have been learning this week ‘how are roads made?’ and ‘who builds and repairs roads?’ This little construction crew explored with hands-on activities different materials to make their own roads. We have learned how the steamroller is used to smooth roads and about road worker safety (hard hats, reflective vests, traffic cones, and heavy boots). After understanding how roads are made, we discussed how roads are maintained. The word maintenance was introduced as ‘repairing or fixing things to prevent them from getting worse’. It is important to repair cracks and potholes to keep roads smooth and to prevent cracks and potholes from spreading.
Please check out our calendar below with important information regarding the end of the year and feel free to contact us if you have any doubts.
Have a lovely weekend,

Small Groups
Toys and Games 1: building puzzles
- Children collaborate in building a big, 3-D puzzle.
Toys and Games 2: Road Map Dramatic Play
- Dramatic play play is an important part of our classroom. It offer teachable moments about conflict resolution. Inevitably, disagreements arose during this game, which offered children a chance to work through their differences and arrange a compromise.
- We have been working on rhymes for a couple of week now and they are becoming experts! In this center children worked with me matching words that rhymed. It was fun to follow the song Down by the Bay while using props.
Discovery: Road Construction Site
- After reading Mighty Machines, children explored the different job that each machine does. Their favorites were the bulldozer and the steamroller.
Blocks: Race Car Rally
- Ready, set, go! Two cars raced down the tracks while one of the children served as the organizer of the event. They took turns and had a fun competition.
Art: making my road
- After our whole- group experiment with making a road by mixing glue, paint and rocks, children wanted a chance to create their own roads. We provided the materials and each group came up with their own "asphalt" mix. We will continue working on these next week
Special Visit
Thank you Joerg. It was great!
Math Learning—and a Touch of Science—in the Outdoor World
Young children strive to understand the world around them. Outdoors, they can spend hours engaged in rich, imaginative play using nothing more than the natural materials they find. How many times have you emptied treasures from the pockets of a preschooler? Pebbles, pinecones, feathers, and leaves are wondrous and hold so much potential for math and science inquiry!
