Normanby School Newsletter 12
Sunday 23 August 2020

Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa – Warmest greetings to you all.
Week 6 is about to get underway which marks the half way point for Term Three.
With Covid reappearing in Aotearoa again we have more easily adjusted to life in Level 2 and are grateful that, for now, we are still safe in our community and able to attend school. We have followed all safety measures as outlined by the Ministry of Education and the Health advice that we have been given and are following the guidelines which are:
· Closed water fountains
· Everyone signing in and out of school grounds whenever on site.
· Following good hygiene etiquette.
· Extra cleaning of high touch areas such as sports equipment, tables etc.
· Hand sanitiser for using before entering and when leaving a room.
· STAYING HOME AND GETTING TESTED WHEN SHOWING ANY SYMPTOMS.
We have really appreciated, once again, all of the help and support you are showing in also following these guidelines. Should we ever need to move to Level 3 again, we have everything in place and will be ready to support your child and whānau during that time.
Ngā mihi nui

BOT Elections
School Elections December 4th 2020
Normanby school will have 2 Parent Representative positions available at the next election in December. We will advertise for Nominations in early November.
Why become a Trustee?
Trustees are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance.
Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be parent representative and other types of trustees. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children.
The trustee elections are the opportunity to vote for candidates who will make a positive difference for children’s education. We need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students!
"Board members are entrusted by the community to ensure the success of our schools and a bright future for our children. We need an education system where all children are expected to succeed and one where we all take shared responsibility in ensuring this happens. As a member of a school board you can make things happen - you can make a difference."
- Lorraine Kerr, NZSTA President

Hero App
Thank you to the many families who have downloaded our new Hero App and are now receiving all of our notifications. In the future this will be our "One Stop Shop" and Facebook posts will be phased out.
Earlier this term we sent out a newsletter explaining how to download and use our new Hero App. If you are having trouble accessing this App or need some help please let us know as we are more than happy to help you out. If you need another newsletter explaining how to download the App, please let the office know and we will arrange for one to go home with your child.
In order to sign in you must use the email address you have provided us. This is the email address where you receive your school newsletters. Parents can log in with separate email addresses, however we must have them in the system first. If you would like to do this, please contact Kay with the required email address.
Our aim has been to implement a robust system that allows teachers, parents, and students to access learning in an online environment that is secure, easy, and effective.
Your home page is the Community Feed. This is where we post messages, our school newsletters and announcements. In time this will take the place of Skool Loop and Facebook.
You can go onto the App to follow your child's learning journey. On the 2020 Report Page you will be able to see your child's current goals, as well as the goals they have achieved and their current progress graphs for reading, writing and maths. The report is designed to build year on year so that over time you will have access to written posts, assessments, images, video and helpful resources all in one place.

A big thank you once again to Harley Ogle and Ted Gane for allowing us to have our School Cross Country on their farm during this busy time. We respectfully ask that no animals are brought along on the day, such as dogs, and that footwear that has been worn on other farms is clean please.

- Shoes are optional to run in, however, they will all need shoes for walking to the course. They will be running on grass, concrete and dirt tracks. As this is a farm there could be the odd fresh cow pat :) We will be walking around the course on Wednesday 2nd September so that all students know where they will be running.
- Drink Bottles - All children will need to take their own NAMED drink bottle as there are no water fountains available.
- Warm clothes are needed for putting on after they compete. We will be away from school for approximately 1 and ½ hours.
- Children will be taking their school bags with them to carry spare items of clothing and drink bottles.
- Parents are able to find a spot around the course in the first two paddocks to support and encourage their child, however, we ask that you do not run with them as this could give them an unfair advantage.
- Parents are able to take their child home after their race. Any parents wishing to do so will need to sign their child out with Ms Ryan first.

New School Sports Shirt
This week we will be putting in our first order for our new school Sports Shirt.
These shirts can be worn for any school sport event i.e school athletics, crosscountry, fun tabloid sports days, athletics days - so they are for everyone at any age.
We are also hoping for most children to have the new sports shirt for Touch Rugby. If your child is planning on playing Touch Rugby in Term 4, we encourage you to purchase a shirt to own. You will then not be required to pay the $20 bond to borrow a school top.
Orders and payment need to be into the school office no later than 12 noon Thursday 27 August please.
They are $40 and are of a high quality dri-fit material. The school is charging parents what we pay for them (i.e. no profit – this is about providing you with a service). Payment can be made at the school office or online.

Swimming Lessons
The PTA are very generously paying for all children at Normanby School to receive six swimming lessons by qualified swimming instructors at the Hawera Aquatic Centre during Term Three. This costs $24 per child for the 6 lessons. We are extremely grateful to the fundraising and support we receive from both the PTA and community.
Due to Covid19 we have put our lessons on hold for now. Once we go back to Alert Level One, we will continue the Puanga Hub lessons (any missed will be caught up). A new timetable will be issued.
Ngahere and Matariki will have their lessons in Term 4.
Children who forget their swimming togs and towel will remain at school.
If you are available to help out with transport or supervision, please let the class teacher or Kay know. Thank you.
Van Payments
All families who choose to use the school vans will have received invoices on the last day of school for Term Three. The bank account number has changed for van payments. Please ensure you put the money into the correct account. Full time users take precedence for the van.
We currently have a waiting list so please ensure you let Kay in the office know asap if there are any changes to your circumstances.
