CMMS Families,
Thank you for another positive and productive week in the classrooms, clubs, activities and athletics! Our students continue to impress me each and every day! You may have noticed a change in the newsletter this week, I will be using this platform called SMORE for the weekly emailed newsletters. As always, if there's information we have missed please email me so I can be sure to answer the question and/or add the information into the next week's email.

Second Step Themes of the Week
Each week students will engage in a social-emotional learning lesson, here are this week's themes for each grade level. Talk with your student about what they are learning in their advisory class, and ask them how they will apply their learning both in and out of school.
Grade 6: Grow Your Brain
Students with a growth mindset about their intelligence achieve more in school. Having a growth mindset helps students persevere when work is hard, seek out new approaches and strategies, and work harder rather than give up when schoolwork gets difficult.
Grade 7: Making Mistakes
A misconception often connected to growth mindset is that simply making lots of mistakes helps you get smarter. Students need to understand that it’s not making mistakes—but learning from mistakes—that’s helpful. This lesson helps students understand how to grow from making mistakes.
Grade 8: Identity and Social Groups
One of the main “tasks” of adolescence is to explore and begin to form identity. Our beliefs about ourselves, as well as others’ beliefs about us, shape our identity, and having different identities in different settings and situations is common. But the need to fit in and conform often leaves adolescents feeling pressured to adopt identities they aren’t comfortable with. This lesson encourages students to seek out relationships in which other people accept them for who they are, so they don’t have to take on identities that don’t suit them.
Emergency Preparedness
Evacuation and Lockdown Drills at CMMS:
Safety and emergency preparedness is a priority here at CMMS! Over the past two weeks students have practiced an evacuation/fire drill and a lockdown drill. We will have monthly drills that focus on various emergencies such as earthquake, shelter-in-place, and different types of situations for a lockdown.
Emergency Preparedness Around the District:
Nobody wants to think about a disaster hitting one of our schools, but it’s imperative that district leaders plan for every conceivable emergency.
