Mensaje de la Directora
February 10 - February 14
ELPAC (English Learners Proficiency Assessment for California) testing is starting soon. Ms. Cecilia Hults - our El Support Teacher - will be emailing teachers with the ELPAC testing Schedule. All English Learners will be taking this test. We will have Individual testers to do the Speaking portion of the test and then group testing for the Listening, writing, and reading portions starting on 3/12. Our SPSA goal to reclassify Bilingual Emergent Students for the year is 17 and only 4 students have reclassified so far. One of the requirements for Reclassification is a score of 4 in ELPAC. We'll we working on provided our best services for our students so they can be English Proficient and reclassified by the end of the year.
Black history is American history, however, observing Black History Month in February gives us a chance to be intentional about learning this particular topic. Ms. Andrews is working on lessons to share with classes. During Morning Announcements, we have been acknowledging African American heroes and will continue during this month. Also, lessons and celebrating Black History Month during February. If you'd like to do a presentation or a lesson to your student's class, please contact your teacher.
I had the best time ever during Lunch with the Principal. Not only this is a special time for your student, it is my favorite time of the month. Thank you to Ms. Zoccoli for donating juice boxes and cookies. We had a fantastic time!! #HOLAJETS are the best!

Why is MDUSD in this position?
It is a combination of issues that most districts are facing. We are not funded by the state
to adequately cover the needs of students, especially when compared to the national average. The pension program investments were impacted by the 2008 recession and the brunt of the differential in costs must be covered by school districts, although employees DO contribute to this.
We are also facing:
- Declining enrollment
- Health costs continue to inch up
- We have to contribute our General Fund money to cover programs that the state and federal government do not fully fund
In order to fully engage the Mount Diablo community in discussions about potential budget solutions and to gather input and recommendations, we have set a series of Budget Community Forums to take place in the next few weeks. We will have Spanish interpretation available at all Community Forums. Further, we will be posting on the MDUSD web page a link to open surveys and digital feedback for all community members who are not able to attend a forum in person. We will also be engaging our bargaining units (Mount Diablo Education Association, Mount Diablo School Psychologists Association, Teamsters, Clerical/Secretarial/Technical, California School Employees Association, and Mount Diablo Management) as well as the District English Language Advisory Committee, Community Advisory Committee, Special Education Local Plan Area, and others in the feedback and recommendation for budget solutions.
The community and our staff are invited to the following meetings:
Tuesday, February 18th – 7:00 PM Ygnacio Valley High School Multi Use Room
Thursday, February 20th - 5:30 PM Riverview Middle School Multi Use Room
Thursday, February 20th – 7:00 PM Pleasant Hill Middle School Multi Use Room
It is important for us all to recognize that this budget reconciliation process will be difficult. This is our opportunity as a community to pull together as a collective team to keep our focus on students at the center of every decision. Now more than ever before, we need to adopt an innovative mindset to identify novel solutions that keep us moving forward as an organization, remain fiscally solvent and operate as good stewards of taxpayer dollars, and the model educational excellence and innovation that all of our students so richly deserve.
