Urgent: Complete OUSD Intent to return 21/22 by May 14th
On April 29 OUSD launched the Share your School Plans for August 2021 for families in ParentSquare. Open until May 14, this form replaces the school-based annual intent to return process as it asks about who is returning to school next year. It also supports our fall planning because it asks about family preferences for distance only or in-person learning. A few important things to know about the Fall Planning Form:
Families not returning in the fall: If a parent states that they are not returning to OUSD in the fall, we will offer their spot to another family (if there is a waitlist).
Families preferring a distance learning only option: The preferences they state around distance learning are for planning purposes only. They will have to make a formal decision later this summer.
This form will be administered in ParentSquare.
Families who want to enroll in the K-12 Distance Learning Pathway will have to make that decision in July. OUSD will launch a form for them to fill out then.

Book Highlight: Lotta Riering-Czekalla
I love the book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. It's about a little girl
named Minli who lives in a village on a mountain called Fruitless Mountain. Her village is poor and she lives with her parents. One day she sets out to find the man on the moon to bring her family good fortune. Can she do it? Will she come back alive? Read this book to find out.

From Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell OUSD Superintendent:
We are now in the final month of the 20-21 school year, and I am happy to celebrate May because it is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Here in OUSD, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up more than 14 percent of our student body. Their families originate from more than 45 different countries, from Burma and Tonga to Nepal and Mongolia, and everywhere in between. These diasporas make up more than 60% of the world’s population. Asian communities total more than 4 billion people in 50 countries who speak more than 2,000 languages.
Pacific Islander communities comprise 25 nations and territories spread over more than 25,000 islands and islets of the western and central Pacific Ocean with some 1,200 languages spoken. Additionally, many people don’t know that the Arab, Southwest Asian and Central Asian countries are also often considered to be part of the Asian continent. Many OUSD students, staff and families celebrated Arab American Heritage Month last month, and we can continue to celebrate throughout May as well - and beyond, of course!
Here are some curriculum resources you can use in your school and at home this month, We also recommend highlighting specific cultures where your Asian American and Pacific Islander students and families originate when you can:

LIBRARY SWAG
BOOK RETURN DRIVE
Last March many students had books checked out of our school library. Many books were returned BUT there are some still checked out - over a year later! This weekend reminders went out via email. Books may be returned at the main office or to teachers. THANK YOU.
CLASSROOM DELIVERY
Real books in students’ hands! Finally! I am delivering books twice a week to students in grades 3-5 who fill out a Library Book Request Form. During library class this week we learned how to search for books on Destiny and how to fill out the form. Teachers will deliver books to students and collect returned books. Books may also be returned to the main office. Here is a flyer for students with links to the search and request form.

Parent Square
OUSD sent out Parent Square messages to all of you last week. Parent Square is a new platform OUSD (and eventually school sites) will be using for sending messages and important forms to all families. It automatically translates into over 100 languages. Each family's account will include all of the OUSD students in your household, and each parent/guardian may have their own account.
First and foremost however, Parent Square will be used for daily health screenings required of all students coming to school in person. With Parent Square, you will be able to complete the screening for all the OUSD students living in your household at the same time.
Some of you have been reaching out with registration issues. I am getting trained on ParentSquare on Monday and should then be able to assist you. Until then, please refer to the following directions:
SETTING UP YOUR PARENT SQUARE ACCOUNT
NOTE: If you have any trouble setting up an account using your email or cell phone, please try an alternate address/number. If that doesn’t get you in, try going to the Aeries Parent Portal to update so that the primary number is a cell phone and/or the correct email addresses are noted. After 24 hours, the system should update, and you should be able to set up your Parent Square account. If you encounter any difficulties, please contact Ms. K (adelma.killingsworth@ousd.org) and Ms. Eve (eve.isbell@ousd.org)
For a Smart Phone: Download the ParentSquare mobile app (Video instructions for using ParentSquare mobile app)
Launch the ParentSquare app.
If you have a Gmail account registered with the school: click on “Sign in with Google.”
If you don’t have a Gmail account or aren't sure if you do, enter the email or cell phone number the school has.
Check your email or texts for a registration link.
Click on the link and follow the instructions to set your password.
On a Computer: Go to http://www.ParentSquare.com
If you have a Gmail account registered with the school: click on “Sign in with Google.”
If you don’t have a Gmail account or aren't sure if you do, then on the right side of the screen under “Sign Up / Create Password," enter the email or cell phone number you have in Aeries and click “GO.”
Check your email or text message for a registration link.
Click on the link and follow the instructions to set your password.
FYI - you can also access Parent Square through the Aeries Parent Portal on a computer or using the Aeries Mobile App. Once in Aeries, click on "COMMUNICATIONS" to access Parent Square.
If an adult in your household does not receive this message, please check the Aeries Parent Portal to be sure each parent/guardian’s correct email is listed in the contacts, updating as needed. Give the system 24 hours, and it should update, enabling them to create their Parent Square account. Again, contact Ms. K (adelma.killingsworth@ousd.org) and Ms. Eve (eve.isbell@ousd.org) if you encounter difficulties.
Having each family set up its Parent Square account now will help us with a smooth return to school.
