February 2021 - Racial Equity Vlog Edition
From the Department
Black History is American History
In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic 'I Have a Dream' speech. His words inspired a generation of activists and became one of the most defining civil rights movement moments. These words continue to motivate generations of Americans today to pursue unity, equity, and social justice actively.
The work of our district culture and climate committee Sparta C3 reinforces the pursuit of "the dream!" The Sparta C3 Racial Equity Taskforce and The Diversity Council provide opportunities and resources to support the district's core value to provide an educational environment that enables every child to feel supported and valued. Regardless of background, we encourage all people to come together and problem-solve ways to address present-day social issues. We are the Dream!
We hope this newsletter's content inspires you to explore the resources provided to reflect on the past, think critically about the present, and restore hope for the future.

Facing History and Ourselves
Through their partnership with educators worldwide, Facing History and Ourselves reaches millions of students in thousands of classrooms every year. Their resources address racism, antisemitism, and prejudice at pivotal moments in history to help students connect choices made in the past to those they will confront in their own lives.
Teaching Tolerance
Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to teachers, administrators, counselors, and other practitioners who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Their mission is to help teachers and schools educate children and youth to be active participants in a diverse democracy. Their program emphasizes the themes of social justice and anti-bias.
This month, Teaching Tolerance provides resources centered on the need for and the history behind Black History Month. The resources also include support for teaching Black History in a way that moves beyond trauma and embraces liberation and resistance. Please visit the website for more information.
