A Weekly Newsletter for Slater Staff 5.29
Welcome to Slater!
To all returning staff and new staff members, welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I know it hasn't started yet, of course, but we have officially said goodbye to the 19-20 school year and are ramping up for the next. The truth is, WE'RE JUST SO EXCITED! We are 100% convinced that every single person on this team is meant to be here and we WILL make significant gains! You are all committed, skilled, and ready to work together to transform academic outcomes for our students. We are grateful you're here.
We want you to have a restful and rejuvenating summer break. However, we just wanted to make you aware of a couple of opportunities available to you as well as a few fun surprises!
Happy Summer!

Fighting the #Quarantine15?
Project: Body

- serve as office hours where you can see the entire leadership team at once if you have questions.
- allow us to share updates, as decisions are happening daily, regarding COVID-19.
- end with a happy hour! There might be a few prizes!
You'll receive a calendar invite for Wind Down Wednesdays with the meeting link, but again, these are completely optional. We just wanted to provide a space for us to stay connected and communicate (and have a few laughs!). Our first meeting is June 3. See you soon!

PBL Summer Course
Hello PBSA Family:
From time to time this summer we hope to make available to all of our staff a number of professional learning opportunities – seminars, courses or other offerings. You will recall that in April and May we made available, consistent with our mission and values as an organization (and free of charge to all), a terrific course on Racial Justice and Equity. More recently, many of you heard from your Principal about the chance to participate in the Equity Centered Critical Friends program.
Now we have a third opportunity, for a course taught by our own Donya Kemp, on becoming a “Project Based Learning Change Agent”. As you know project-based instruction is a core element of the PBSA Model, and we are committed to making culturally relevant PBL the heart of the Purpose Built Schools experience.
This course begins Monday (not much notice, I realize) and involves five weekly sessions. The detailed description is as follows:
This 10-hour course will help you become the powerful agent of social change that you are meant to be and empower you to help your students become the transformative agents of social change that they are destined to be. You will learn: -How to define and design authentic project-based learning, centered on service and social justice. -Strategies to develop buy-in from the school community and meaningful public partnerships -Effective tips and tricks to help you “hack” any curriculum or instructional model. In this interactive class, you will learn to master the PBL process as you design projects in real-time, with continuous guidance, partnership, and feedback. You will experience all aspects of PBL, including design, evaluation, and reflection. Ongoing PBL support will be available to all participants for one year following the course. The format of this course will include live sessions, shared digital learning space and independent application, and continuous feedback, resources, and support.
As a special bonus, our own PBL Coordinator, Diona Williams, will be “attending” the course, as well, and be available to help translate the principles and practices of the course to our specific PBL plans for next year.
The course is available to the general public for $200. However, we are making it available to you for FREE. Here's a special sign-up link designed solely for PBSA staff, which will allow you to sign up for free: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=nk8FVadRK0-bBdKmmVma08o06aTPI7BOhj0xgqBmC2xUOElUUllKQU5aTFhUMVpaVE1XWkZaSFkxMS4u
We would love to have a huge contingent from PBSA participate in this course. It is totally voluntary, though, and all you do not need to do is sign up on the link. I hope many of you will take advantage of this opportunity. Thanks to all, and I hope your first few weeks of summer are off to a great and restful start.
Greg
