Welcome 5th Grade Families
April 2023
Dear Future Jaguars,
Welcome to Jane Addams Middle School!
Our goal at JAMS is to make access to information as easy as possible so we will continue to send updates via this newsletter. Please let us know at jams@seattleschools.org if your address, phone number, or email has changed. We want to be sure that families are getting the information they need for a successful transition to middle school.
In the next two months, our 6th grade team of myself, teachers, and counselors will visit elementary school classrooms (John Rogers, Olympic Hills, Sacajawea, Olympic View, Cedar Park, Cascadia, Thornton Creek, and Decatur). But even before we meet your student for the first time, we are preparing here at JAMS. It all starts with a class schedule and your family has a few choices to make.
Class Registration (this is what everyone is looking for)
Most students get to select one or two “elective courses” in middle school. All students take Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science but have options for their additional classes. As students get older they have even more choice in 7th and 8th grade.
Please see the student registration link below for more information about electives. For students who qualify for Special Education Services our IEP teachers will work directly with elementary schools this spring to support planning for your student beyond your selection of elective courses.
Our Highly Capable qualified students receive services through a cluster group model in our Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science classes. All students take the next course in sequence for their math classes. Below is the link for elective registration.

Your Middle School Counselor
Our counselors will all have office hours at JAMS scheduled in late August to answer any questions or discuss any concerns for the upcoming school year. Counselors will reach out about 504 plans in late summer/early fall. Counselors are currently very busy preparing our 8th graders for high school and will be more able to connect with families in June and during August.
Updated Information
In June, please start to check out our webpage at addamsms.seattleschools.org on a regular basis for updates. There you can find staff contact information as well as calendars, school policies, school supply lists, and other important information. We will update our websites, this newsletter and social media as we get closer to the start of the 23-24 school year.
Summer Music at JAMS, July 10-July 21
JAMS is hosting the SPS Summer Music Program. All future JAMS musicians (including those brand new to music) are invited to attend this weeklong experience. More information coming in June.
Wednesday, June 21st, 6:30-8:00pm - 5th Grade Welcome Event for Students and Families
In-Person event at Jane Addams Middle School. Feel free to drop off your student, or stay for a bit a "Family Care" and meet other families. Students will be in small groups, making new friends and getting an introduction to middle school from JAMS student leaders.
We look forward to meeting you this spring,
Paula
