Briarwood Showcases Instruction
On November 30th, Interim State Superintendent Shelia Alles, Senator Bieda, and Representative Chirkun pent the afternoon at Briarwood Elementary . While they visiting Briarwood they were given the opportunity to observe instruction that is engaging and advancing our students' higher level thinking skills. A portion of the visit was in the STEM enrichment class where second grade students were using I Pads, VEX building kits, and Ozobots in order to learn how to code. After time in the STEM room, the visitors were also provided a glimpse into our literacy programming. They visited Mrs. Swindells’s fourth grade for a Reading Workshop lesson focused on character traits. Reading Recovery was also showcased with a lesson Mrs. Kreger held with a 1st grade student. We are proud of the efforts our students and staff put forth each day, and it was great to share this with our guests.
Pinewood Update
Meeting on October 24th, the District Wide Elementary PLCs focused their attention on common assessment calendars, the prioritization of essential standards and the implementation of our math, reading, and writing curriculum. Additionally, our PLCs discussed their Dr. Taylor professional development case studies and the utilization of our new Literacy Footprints Guided Reading materials.
Essential Practices in Elementary Literacy Conference
Staff members from Briarwood, Pinewood, and Westwood traveled to Grand Rapids and attended a conference on the Essential Practices in Elementary Literacy. This conference was beneficial, in that the practices are designed to reach every student, in every classroom, every day. Ranging from the implementation of vocabulary instruction, to the proper utilization of small group instruction, the conference gave our staff insight into the practices that will best support our students in our literacy lessons.
Fall at Pinewood
The fall season is always an exciting time at Pinewood. This year our PTC had another successful Fall Festival, with a petting zoo, hay ride, photo booth, cake walk, trunk or treat and more!
Additionally, and for the second year in a row, the Nitz Family was able to get pumpkins for our entire student body to do science, math, and literacy work with, and to decorate for Halloween.
Lastly, some students from De La Salle generously donated their time and candy by going from classroom to classroom and allowing our students to trick or treat. Unfortunately, our annual parade was canceled due to poor weather, but their attendance more than made up for the lack of sunshine!
Westwood Update
In an effort to boost reading achievement, Michigan lawmakers passed Public Act 306 in October 2016. In hopes of helping more students become proficient by the end of 3rd grade, the law requires extra support for K-3 students who are not reading at grade level. This law also states that a child may be retained in 3rd grade if he/she is one or more grade levels behind in reading.
What does that mean for our students in Warren Woods? Over the last several weeks, each of our elementary schools have developed Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIP) for K-3 students, who need extra support with reading. Reading Plans include SMART Goals developed for individual students along with best practice reading and writing instruction, strategic intervention, and a read at home plan. These plans are shared with parents and will be closely monitored throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to connect with parents, fostering positive partnerships between home and school. It's important to remember, we all work better, together!
Fall Conferences 2018
Time flies when you are having fun! This year, our elementary Fall Conferences were held on October 22 and November 1, 2018. It was exciting to see such a great turn-out from each of our elementary schools. This is always an important time of year, as we have the opportunity to meet with parents and discuss their student's academic progress.
PBIS Westwood Tailgate Incentive
Our students enjoyed a fun-filled day celebrating awesome CATS behavior. Students participated in outdoor, team-building activities facilitated by our staff and Wayne State student athletes. Topping off an exciting day, our Wildcats were able to purchase a sundae with their C.A.T.S coins earned over the month.
